Let's take a trip back to the past...

 3,2,1, BLAST OFF!

What if people had not learned to farm? If people had not learned to farm, they wouldn't have settled down to one place. Civilizations would not have any structure if no one was settling. Humans would hunt and gather, and would lack the ensured supply that agriculture provides.

Waaay back in the days, people started to settle into civilizations in the Fertile Crescent, an area in southwest Asia with rich soil and river access. These civilizations used agriculture, the act of planting crops for food and market, as a way of survival. An example of one river valley is Mesopotamia, a river valley located on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The Sumerians of Mesopotamia had many unique ways of life. Sumerians built irrigation ditches, ditches that carried river water to their fields of crops, in order to produce more fruits and vegetables. Irrigation was very common for the ancient river valleys. A few of these civilizations also shared their belief of polytheism, or multiple gods. Ideas like these from such civilizations let to the cultural diffusion, or spreading, between cultures. | Ancient River Valley Civilization

During the Classical period, Greece and Rome discovered many new ways of doing things that are still seen throughout the world today. Greece formed many political structures, such as aristocracy, a government ruled by nobles. Greeks also used a polis, or city-state, as the fundamental political unit. Greece was a democracy, rule by people, and Rome contributed the idea of republic, a government in the power of its citizens. Both empires play major roles in building more complex societies in history. | Classical Greece/Rome

If Rome had not fallen, it would have gained more land and power, making it an even bigger player in political history. It also would've had more time to spread culture, but its culture may not have ever been considered to be conserved. Eventually, though, its power would most likely corrupt Rome. | What if Rome did not fall?

What if the Mongols had not opened the Silk Road to safe travels? | If the Mongols had not opened the Silk Road to safe travels, merchants would have less access to the movement of goods and people would be forced to use ocean routes for trade. The Mongols would have also seemed to be much more intimidating to more groups of people.

Post classical asia-africa | After the classical era, most of Asia was conquered by the Mongols. Ghengis Khan was the "universal ruler" of the Mongol clans, nomads who traveled in groups. As well as the Mongols, Japan was also within its own civilization. The Japanese had warriors called samurai, and had a shogun, or "supreme general of the emperor's army." In this way they uniquely organized their people.

Medieval Europe | Medieval Europe was a time of change. One example of change during this time was the crusades, "holy wars" to gain control of the Holy Land, or Jerusalem. Gothic, a new style of architecture, was prevalent throughout churches during this time. The Magna Carta was also written, this document limited the king's power in England. During this time, parliament was also used in government, parliament was a legislative group. France and England were making many developments.

If the Black Plague had not attacked Western Europe, there would be a much larger population. The Black Plague also helped medical advancements and prevention of later plagues, and without it, we would be less medically advanced today. | What if the Black Plague had not attacked Western Europe?

If Gutenburg hadn't invented the printing press, ideas would be traveling much slower today. Typed print has allowed the publishing of many books which contribute to culture around the world, as well as spread ideas quickly. People would still be writing books without the printing press, which would make the process very slow. | What if Gutenburg hadn't invented the printing press?

Renaissance/ Reformations | The Renaissance was a time where creativity was exploding throughout Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance. During this time, historians studied classical texts, this led to humanism, the idea of human potential and achievements. Popes became patrons of the arts by spending money for the cause. New writers begin to reform society, and with this came the printing press, the first machine that used moveable ink type to print pages. This helped spread new ideas.

Now we are traveling to the Enlightenment and the Revolutions. This was a time when many revolutions, which are times of change, took place. Many scientists and other people helped changed the world by creating things that people use every day. Galileo Galilei was a very important scientist because he created the telescope and the scientific method, used in experiments everyday, that changed the world of science for the future. After the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment was a time when more people spread these ideas all over the world. This was when natural rights were created that give us the freedom we have today. | Enlightenment

What if the Enlightenment ideas were not embraced by the colonists? The ideas and inventions during this time are very important to the world today. If people had not embraced these ideas when they had first appeared the world and history would not be the same. The same ideas might have been brought up later in time but the discoveries and things we learned in the past would not have been made. And without those discoveries we might not know all the things we know today about the world.

world war i | World War I was triggered when Franz Ferdinand, the archduke of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated. The war began when alliances, or political partnerships, caused the domino effect as each country was brought into war. Russia, France, and Britain, The Allies, against Germany and Austria-Hungary, the Central Powers. The U.S. eventually gets involved with the Allies, and the Allies defeat the central powers and put all the blame on Germany.

What if Germany had not been solely blamed for World War I? | If Germany had not only taken the blame for World War I there would have been much less post war tension. The countries could collaboratively take take the blame and work together, possibly saving millions from the deaths of World War II and the Holocaust.

What if the U.S. had not dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan? | If the U.S. had not dropped the bombs on Japan then Japan might not have gotten involved with the war. That one thing could have prevented the war from getting a bad as it did. It would also give the allies more power and motivation in the war.

World war ii | After World War I, there was a growing sense of nationalism, or pride in one's country, throughout the world. Germany was bitter they got all the blame for the first war. Hitler, the dictator of Germany, was leading attacks on countries surrounding Germany, taking control of some of them. The Holocaust, mass slaughtering of millions of Jews also occured during this time. Eventually the Axis powers, Japan, Germany, and Austria-Hungary, surrendered to the Allies.

What if the Soviet Union had landed on the moon first and not the United States? | If the Soviet Union had landed on the mood first, they would've been much more advanced n the space race. It also might have motivated the U.S. to work towards doing something else that hasn't been done yet today in space.

COLD WAR | The Cold War was a time of diplomatic hostility between the United States and Soviet Union during the years after World War II. New alliances, such a NATO, the U.S.'s pact of defense, and the Warsaw Pact, the Soviet's alliance pact formed during this time. Nuclear threats were also present, both powers had atomic weapons. Both sides willingness to go to the edge of war became known as brinkmanship.
