FC: title nine women in sports controversy | Katie creswell
Equal opportunity in sports? Title nine can guarantee that.
"Title nine has probably had more impact on the American education system than any piece of federal legislation." Shocking! Who knew sports would help academics. Title nine is a law that was passes in order to ensure equal opportunity for girls and women in high school and college sports. It receives federal funds from organizations discriminating on a gender basis. | Title nine is a great piece of legislation because it gives women the right to equal opportunity in sports and participation levels have increased greatly in not only sports but academics as well.
How many more females would strive to do better in school knowing that they have a chance to go somewhere with their future? Giving women the opportunity to participate in sports opens scholarships for many women to attend college. In order to play and maintain a scholarship good grades are essential. Statistics show that more females are passing high school and college with higher GPA'S since this law was passed.
"More than 3 million girls now play on high school teams and 9,100 womens college teams compete at the varsity level." | Title nine has given so many women new opportunities to participate in what they simply enjoy doing. | In the last Olympics women set a record of 4,400 total competing athletes.
Some believe it is taking away from male athletes. | DISAGREE? | Even after the many great things that title IX has done there are still many questions of whether or not it is even necessary. | Is it just a waste of the governments time? female sports are growing so vast the government doesn't need to worry about it any longer. | Taking away female coaches. | Women are prospering at the expense of funding for men. | Male opportunities are being reduced.
While not everyone may agree with title nine i feel the purpose it serves is greatly needed. I know I myself would have missed out on so many great experiences and would not have a clue of what the future holds for me without athletics. I, am pro title nine. Without it i can honestly say i do not believe i would be the person i am today. The friendships, memories, practices, glory and even the pain. Sports have shaped the person i am. I am an athlete. Athletics can teach so many important life lessons such as time management, discipline, self motivation, determination, the power to set and exceed beyond goals, and so much more.
