FC: Mission Statement: To provide a brief introduction into the African-American art that has for centuries told the stories of history, relationships, triumphs, defeats and spirituality amongst others. Curator: Theron J. Hudson Location: ART 1030 Date: Thursday Grant by: Amee Patel

Art to the African-American has primarily taken the approach of some degree of realism as seen in this carving. To some this would be disturbing but to others it would represent Art and Beauty, as seen by the artist.

The artist would use self-actualization through their art to bring them closer to their own understanding of why a certain event occurred and how to make sense of the whole situation. This is definitely present in this painting.

The artist have use their art as a way of conveying their own views of society as in this 1998 photograph by a very controversial artist Renee Cox, titled; Liberation of Lady J. and U.B. Notice that the characters are wearing the color of the Africa. Note the red, black and green colors. This is art form is known as Art and the Social Consciousness.

Art seen in photography is a true capturing of a moment in time. This is a photo of two of the African-American leaders that was rarely seen together. This could be seen as a form of Art and Immortality by the way that it depicts these two icons in a joyful handshake with seemingly no pressure baring down upon them.

Inside of the African-American culture, there was this inherent sense of family which would represent the content or all that the artwork contained. The artist would frequently represent the family in their works always providing the viewer with notion that faith or belief, family and all else is the structured path.

The artist would create some of the best forms of representational art or art that presents objects in recognizable, though not realistic form. The artist style or his specific way of capturing his art, would make him individual in the way that his works would provoke emotions.

The artist would often have a religious theme or reason why the work is being created. Both artist have done a great job of giving us two-point perspective. | For a moment compare and contrast the two Paintings titled,"The Last Supper." The artist in the above painting takes the view that the members were all men of color.

Here is an example of the artist using Fantasy in photography which is giving a realistic subject (main character) within a piece that has a supernatural or unrealistic backdrop. Note: The vanishing point in this photo adds to its theme by giving more dimension to the odds against the hero with its shadows and voids.

Photos obtained via Google search and from personal albums Artwork obtained via www.artwork.com and www.blackart.com
