The main reason why we went to Paris in France was because our main intent was to visit the landing beaches of Normandy. The pictures of the soldiers on the left was a boat filled with young adults heading to Omaha Beach where most of them met their death. June 6, 1944 is a date held in history as the allied forces of Great Britain, Canada and the Unites States transformed Normandy into a vast battlefield battling the Nazi regime that ruled Europe. This battle became known as D-Day.
THE ALIED FORCES LIBERATE NORMANDY | AMERICAN TROOPS BATTLING THE ENEMY IN NORMANDY
GERMAN BUNKERS | Omaha Beach | THE GERMANS HAD BUNKERS ALONG THE ENTIRE COAST LINE, OMAHA BEACH SUFFERED MOST CAUSUALITES & DEATH. IT WAS A FLAT BEACH WITHOUT ANY COVER
The Germans used Polish, Ukraine prisons of war to build these bunkers. | These bunkers were well hid from surveillance as they were built on every hill and covered with vegetation.
The white cliffs are located on Utah Beach. US Rangers had to climb up them. | NORMANDY MEMORIAL | IT'S HARD TO COMPREHEND THE TOTAL LOSS OF LIFE UNDER EACH CROSS ARE THE REMAINS OF U.S. SOLDIERS. THESE DIDN'T INCLUDE THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN CEMETARIES.
The US cemetery all of the headstones face West instead of East. The eagle status also face west. They are all facing America. It also slopes and the cemetery overlooks Omaha Beach where most lost their lives during the battle of Normandy D-Day.
GENERAL EISENHOWER WARNED US!! It is a matter of history when the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead. He did this because he said in words to this effect: "Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened." This week, the UK debated whether to remove the holocaust from its school curriculum because it "offends" the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed yet..However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it. It is now more than 60 years after the Second world War in Europe ended. This is added in the memory of the 6 million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900 Catholic priests we were murdered, raped, burned, starved, beaten, experimented on and humiliated while the German people looked the other way. Now, Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be "a myth" it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets. FREEDOM ISN'T FREE... SOMEONE HAD TO PAY FOR IT. THE SACRIFICES MADE FROM THE ALLIED FORCES INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES, GREAT BRITAIN, CANADA SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
The Channel Islands were the only British Territory to be occupied by the Nazi's during the 1939 to 1945 World War II. Islanders were immediately imprisoned and amongst thousands of unsmiling enemy troops, all armed with daggers, bayonets, guns and rifles. There world was suddenly turned upside down. Parents had to make a choice, to evacuate their children out of the Channel Islands and send them to England for safety. Decisions had to be made quickly as the Nazi regime was closing in on the Islands. The children had to assemble at St. Josephs School, they said goodbye to their parents, then walked down with their teachers to the harbor. | It was a difficult decision for the parents as thousands of them were placed on boats and shipped out to England without knowing when they would be back. I wonder if the parents would have made this decision if they knew it was going to be 5 years before they'd see their children again. My step-father Len LeComte and his family of 14 siblings were all evacuated to England, his sister Kathleen married my mother's brother Syd. Len after his return home would never leave Guernsey, he said he had the worst case of head lice in England and has never gone back. Children who stayed in Guernsey and the children who left during WWII both have horror stories. The Nazi's did land on 28-June-1940.
The Nazi's built numerous underground bunkers along the Guernsey coastline which were almost impossible to see with the naked eye.
The bunkers were hard to see and were well hid. | GERMAN CEMETARY ABOVE ALLIED FORCES SUNK A GERMAN SHIP OUTSIDE ST.PETER PORT. GUERNSEY, LOTS OF GERMAN SAILORS DROWNED.
So what happened to the Guernsey natives during the occupation of the Nazi's. The regular German solider wasn't wicked, only when the S.S. and Gestapo arrived did things change for the worse for the natives. In 1942 orders came from the Fuhrer that any head of household in the Channel Islands who were not born there had to be rounded up and sent to camps in France and Germany. Didn't matter if the wife was a native, if the husband wasn't as head of the household then they were all deported, most never to be seen or heard of again, complete families including small children. The German soldiers kept apologizing to them as they were herded off onto ships, they didn't like it but they had to do what the fuhrer told them to do. Neighbors turned in neighbors to the S.S., one lady hid a Polish prisoner and was turned in to the S.S. she was caught, sent to a concentration camp in Germany and was gassed. With lack of food people started stealing from everyone, household pets were also not safe as they were being taken and ate. All residents had to turn in their radios and weapons, if you were caught with them you were severely punished by torture. The island of Sark became the concentration camp for prisoners of war and Channel Island natives who were caught breaking the law. The POW's were treated very inhumane, it was these prisoners that built all of the cement bunkers in the channel islands. On June 6, 1944 the residents of the Channel Islands looked overhead to see hundreds of planes heading to Normandy for the beginning of D-Day and they celebrated hoping for deliverance from their occupation. This turned the tide on the Germans in Guernsey, there supply ships were now cut off from France, now they had no food and were also stealing pets to eat. They started to look pretty shabby, no longer the proud German soldier. Liberation: At a few minutes to three o'clock Mr. Churchill declared that the war was over "and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today". Even though Hitler was dead and the war was over Admiral Huffmeir refused to give the Channel Islands up, it took the islands being surrounded by the British navy before he complied.
