Christian: A Bohemian writer who moves to Paris during the revolution. He ends up finding love in an unexpected place, the Moulin Rouge. Christian is a romantic hero, the only thing he ever wanted was love & he was willing to sacrifice anything for it. This is his asset and also his flaw because it leads to his undoing. Christian falls for Satine, a woman who sells her body to the highest bidder, the Duke. He is nearly driven mad with jealousy trying to fight for her. He faces death in the final scene when he returns to the Moulin Rouge to see if Satine still loves him. The Duke's manservant, Warner, sees Christian and tries to shoot him, as requested by the Duke. | Christian
"to “love and be loved in return"
Mentor | Toulouse: A Bohemian revolutionist who becomes Christians "secretary" giving him an opportunity of a lifetime; to write Spectacular Spectacular & introducing him to important people along the way. Shortly after meeting Christian, Toulouse asks him to finish writing the play Spectacular Specatular & then proceeds to set up a meeting with Ms. Satine. Toulouse becomes well aware of Christians infatuation with Ms. Satine and encourages him to go for it. He is by Christians side until the very end when he saves him from being shot by the Duke's manservant.
“Luckily, right at that moment, an unconscious Argentinean fell through my roof.”
Harold Zidler | Harold Zidler: owner of the Moulin Rouge is the care taker of the young aspiring actress and his Sparkling Diamond. Harold sets Satine up with the Duke, a man who would give her anything she ever wanted. Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke and falls in love with him. When Harold finds out about their secret love he forbids Satine from seeing him. Although he wants her to be happy he knows the penniless writer could never provide for her, making him the threshold guardian.
Sparkling Diamond | Satine: a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge who wants to become an actor, but chooses love above all in the end. Satine undoubtedly loves Christian throughout the movie, but goes back and forth between him and the Duke because she knows the Duke will give her anything she desires. She is the shape shifter because of her inability to make a decision, making the story suspenseful. Satine is forced to deceive Christian and tell him that she doesn't love him in order to save his life.
“Use your talent to save him. Hurt him. Hurt him to save him.”
The Duke | The Duke: a very rich and powerful man who claims Satine for him and only him. The Duke is the shadow because he endorses Spectacular Spectacular under two conditions: 1) Satine would be his. 2) He could hold the deed to the Moulin Rouge to insure no shenanigans would happen. This allows him to keep a close watch on everyone. Once he finds out that Satine and Christian are lovers he makes it his mission to kill him.
“It's not that I'm a jealous man, I just don't like other people touching my things!”
Christian's call to adventure occurs when an unconscious Argentinean falls through his roof and he fills in for him in a play rehearsal. He comes up with brilliant suggestions to improve the play and the Bohemians ask him to be a co-writer.
Christian crosses the threshold when he goes to the Moulin Rouge for the first time to meet with Satine..
Christian's love for Satine is tested through his strength to deal with jealousy and keeping their relationship a secret. The Duke presents himself as an obstacle to their love because he thinks he should have Satine and will go to any length to get her. The group of Bohemian actors and people at the Moulin Rouge are all his allies in gaining Satine’s love.
Christian faces several tests, but the supreme ordeal occurs during opening night of Spectacular Spectacular when he sneaks into the Moulin Rouge to pay Satine. After he throws the money at her and walks off she starts singing the lovers secret song. Christian realizes she means it and runs back to her.
Christian’s reward in the end is Satine, but she dies her tragic fated death. | “How could I know in those last fatal days that a force darker then jealousy and stronger then love had begun to take hold of Satine.”
The Road Back After Satine dies Christian is devastated, but as she takes her last breath she makes Christian promise her something; that he would write their story. "A story about love. A love that will last forever.”
