3: John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas,California. He was a novelist and short story writer. Some of his notable work is The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and Of mice and Men. He wrote a total of 27 books. Steinbeck attended Standford University. he left without a degree, and then held many odd jobs in New York. Then he moved back to California and met his "to be" wife. His marriage and life was depressing. Then he wrote Tortilla Flat, and then from there his novelistic success took off. Years later the well known author died at the age of 66 on December 20, 1966.
5: La Paz, Mexico is the setting of The Pearl. La Paz was first inhabited by Neolithic hunter-gatherers over 10,000 years ago. Hernan Cortez discovered La Paz in 1535, which was then named Villa de la Santa Cruz. La Paz was given its name in 1596 by Sebastian Vizcaino.

9: Summary: Chapter one Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are the three main characters. Kinow has black curly hair and is the husband of Juana. juana is the braided black haired lady who is the wife of kino. There son is Coyotito which gets stung by a scorpion. After the scorpion stings him, Kino with anger stomps the scorpion in the ground. So, Kino, Juana, and coyotito in juana's hands travels to the wealthier part of city along with poor village people to meet the doctor. The doctor is extremely wealthy and greedy. As kino came to the gate Kino asks the servant if he can see the doctor. The servant comes back down to the gate and says that the doctor is somewhere on business. In anger Kino punches the gate. In sadness and depression Kino walks away.
10: summary: chapter 2 Kino and Juana are getting everything ready in the morning to go pearling, which is kino's job. The family had been out in the water all day and finally they found the perfect pearl. Kino says it is a size of a seagulls egg. As they find it, all the other pearler's started coming over to there boat. Just as Kino and Juana looked at Coyotito, there was a large rash all over his neck!
11: summary: chapter 3 This chapter takes place after the pearl. The doctor works on the baby and gices him some medicine. Kino and Juana are a little nervous, because they did not know if the doctor is doing the right thing. When the doctor gives him the medicine, the baby starts to heal. Kino daydreams during the chapter about what he is going to do with the money when he sales the pearl and becomes rich. He daydreams about various things, like putting Coyotito in school, buy new clothes, and marrying Juana. During the night, Kino heard a sound and it was an intruder. Kino got up and chased him out of the hut. Then kino and Juana debated if they should keep the pearl or not. They decided to keep the pearl until the morning.
12: Summary: chapter 4 This chapter began with the family dressing up in there nicest clothes to go sell the pearl in. Juana dressed in the best clothes she could find, and dressed the baby in a sailor looking outfit. The family was in a very good mood that morning because they thought they were going to get a large sum of money for the pearl. As the family walked down the street on there way to the pearl buyers office, the town people trailed in behind them. Later Kino arrived at the pearl buyers office, and walked in and greeted them. As soon as Kino showed the pearl buyer the pearl the buyer said "fools gold!" The pearl buyer offered him 1000 pesos, and Kino did not agree with him and stormed out of the office. He was so angry because he though the pearl buyers cheated him. when Juana said supper is ready she did not hear a reply. Juana suddenly came to Kno, and found him laying on the ground half conscious with a gash in his cheek. The couple tried to find who did it but they did not have any luck. The two again, debated if they should buy the pearl, and they came to a conclusion that they would start early the next morning in the canoe and travel to the north.
13: Summary: chapter 5 Kino awakened to Juana sneaking out of the hut with the pearl. Kino tackled her, and hit her on the face. She fell down and Kino ran back up to his hut, and found a man who was about to fight him. As a defense Kino slit his throat. When Juana came up to the hut she found that it was on fire. In fear, Kino and Juana ran to the canoe to try to escape, and found that there was a hole in the canoe. Juan Thomas, kino's brother, and Apollonia kept the family in their hut. Kino and Juana planned that they were going to head out to the north in the middle of the night.
14: Summary: Chapter 6 Kino, Juana, and Coyotito headed to the North. They were being tracked by trackers on their journey. As they wen, they covered up there tracks so they would not be found. As they made it to the mountains, they had to hide out, so they would not be found and killed. The trackers approached, and Kino had no chance but to kill the trackers, so he did and succeeded. During the journey, Coyotito did die. Towards the end, Kino and Juana headed back to town, and went to the gulf. Kino threw th peal in the water and watched it sink and disappear.
15: Moral: The moral is that you should not let the material things get in the way of what is really important. Kino did this by making the pearl the most important thing, and it destroyed his life, which was the real important thing.
