3: Worldview and Philosophy of Teaching

4: Worldview and Philosophy of Teaching An individual’s worldview is a fundamental component of the self to bear in mind when selecting an appropriate career path. This mental framework will orient principles and morals one will carry with oneself and employ within one’s practice of work. This element will ultimately shape and influence the way an individual directs their actions in life. I believe in my 23 years of life, my worldview has profoundly taken shape in great respects to my Catholic upbringing which has been fostered by my parents. My early childhood was greatly influenced by my Catholic family upbringing; attending mass at our local parish, and taking part in prayerful family life. To continue a wholesome Catholic life, I was educated in both Catholic elementary and secondary school settings where I was introduced to not only to the religious sacraments but also what it meant to be a Catholic. I believe that God is the ultimate Father who has fashioned us through His own image. He has blessed human beings with the gift of life. Human beings only have an opportunity to

5: walk the earth for a certain length of time and that it is within this time that we honour God by carrying out His work. I believe that doing the will of God is the meaning of human life. Furthermore, it is my belief that one’s personal viewpoint together which the choices one makes impacts considerably on the fulfillment of one’s life journey. I can see the Earth as a stage where God places us and watches how we perform with the gifts and talents He has given to us. It is through our discretion how we choose to use those given gifts through our work. God has given us a moral order to follow through the teachings of the 10 Commandments. God’s Commandments give us a framework that shows us how to navigate through our interactions with others. Through my Catholic faith and my belief of carrying out God’s work as the meaning of life, I conceive my worldview as serving God by using my gifts to interact with others through being of service to them. Even from a young age, I obeyed a call to be of service to others; whether it was counselling others with problems or trying to maintain the peace in relationships, I felt a strong yearning towards helping others through my actions. Through the reading of scripture,

6: it can be easily seen how Jesus was of service to all people of different orientations and even those who were marginalized in society. Today, I have come to recognize my divine call given to me by God as the vocation of teaching. While contemplating a career choice, I wanted to marry together my Catholic worldview, being of service to others and my longing for a rewarding, fulfilling profession. I found no better one than that of teaching. Through my decision to teach as my desired career path, I have internalized a teaching philosophy which affects my work with children and youth in education. I believe the purpose of a career in education is to give oneself in service and to do it in such a way as to reflect God’s goodness. I approach teaching and learning as a bi-directional process which benefits both teacher and student. This special relationship will continue to impact the rest of these individuals’ lives. Through my own educational practice of being of service to students, I find that I am fulfilling God’s work by making a difference in others’ lives.
