2: Susan and I left Seattle on Sept 16, 2011 and flew to Paris for a 3 hour layover and then to Marco Polo, Venice. We stayed at Hotal Arlecchino which was located one canal over from the Grand Canal. It was a great location. We spent 3 days in Venice and from there went by train to Florence and by vaporetto (water bus) to the islands of Murano and Burano. What a unique city. Amazing! We boarded the Holland America,Nieuw Amsterdam on 9/21 and sailed to Dubrovnik on 9/22. Dubrovnik is a 'walled city' built in the 13th century,we climbed to the top where they were filming a movie....lots of men dressed as 'Romans'. Beautiful views, hot and lots of steps!! Next stop - Corfu...beautiful city. There were horsedrawn carts with colorful umbrellas. We went on the Panoramic Corfu tour...beautiful. Next stop, Argostoli, Greece. We went on a tour of Dragnoti Caves and an underground lake - dipped our feet in the warm water...had lunch. Next stop, Santorini, what a beautiful place! Very hot - got lost on the side of the cliff trying to take pics of the blue domed roofs. Made it to the dreaded tour bus in the nick of time. Next port was Catania on Sicily. We took a tour to Taormina - loved this quaint Italian town!! So picturesque! It is near Mt. Etna and has the ruins of a Greek Theater....
3: The next port we visited was Salerno. We were originally to go to Naples but rumor has it that they are having a garbage strike. From Salerno we chose the Shopping in Sorrento tour. We had an explanation of how they do inlaid wood and then off on our own. We ate lunch at Fauno Bar and had FREE Limoncello. It is made here.Good day - beautiful city. Civitavecchia is the port for ROME. We did this one on our own. We took the train for 19 euros round trip to St. Peters. We found the Hop On Hop Off bus and were off to Trevi, Spanish Steps, Coliseum and all the rest. It is an amazing city and I especially loved the Coliseum. We got on the 'fast' train back and it only took 30 minutes. Loved Rome but it was very crowded with tourists if you can believe that!! Livorno - we booked the Cinque Terre tour - we took a 'coach' to the Cinque Terre village of Manarola and walked on the Path of Love to Rigiomorre and then a boat to Vernazza for lunch. After a relaxing lunch we boarded the train for LaSpezia and met our coach for the ride back to the ship. Great day.Villages are very picturesque. They built terraced gardens so they could grow grapes and food. The side of the mountain was too steep otherwise. Last port - Barcelona. What a city! We stayed on La Ramblas and were close to everything. Loved the Gaudi and other mosaic buildings. Want to go back!
