FC: Cultural Literacy | By: Jessica Doyle
Defined | "Cultural Literacy is the ability to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences in the customs, values, and beliefs of one's own culture and the culture of others."
Why... | -The ethnic, cultural, and language diversity in the United States and in the nation's schools is continuing to increase. - More than 1 million immigrants will enter the United States each year for the foreseeable future. -If current demographic trends continue, students of color will make up 46% of the nation's students in 2020. | " An important goal of the schools should be to forge a common nation and diversity from the tremendous ethnic, cultural, and language diversity."
Juntos, podemos hacer que el mundo gire.
Students | Culturally Literate Students should exhibit these characteristics: -Student is highly knowledgeable about specific cultural beliefs, values, and sensibilities that might affect the way that he / she and others think or behave. -Student has substantial knowledge of history of both mainstream and non-mainstream American cultures, and the history of other nations. He/She has a sophisticated understanding of how these histories have impacted relationships among groups. -Student realizes that history is socially and politically constructed, and has sufficient knowledge to spontaneously take the perspective of non-mainstream groups when learning history. -Student understands the dangers of stereotyping and other biases, is sensitive to issues of racism and prejudice, and highly cognizant of biased messages about other cultural groups (e.g., within media).
-Student understands that individuals from diverse cultures share some fundamental beliefs; he/she appreciates and accepts diversity, and seeks opportunities to learn about and interact with different cultures. -Student understands the value of being multilingual, is at or working towards this proficiency, and is intrinsically motivated to learn not only a new language, but also about the culture from which the language is derived. -Student almost always communicates, interacts, and works positively with individuals from other cultural groups; he/she seeks opportunities to learn from diverse perspectives. -Student regularly uses technology to gain access to individuals or resources from other cultures; these efforts are generally motivated by interest and exceed course requirements.
Teacher | From a position of cultural literacy, teachers are better able to connect with their students. "Culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) is one response that addresses cultural mismatches directly and often addresses macro-level structures indirectly. Through repeated and patterned experience in the world, we develop schema through which we filter future experiences. New learning is strongest when we are able to make connections to prior knowledge. CRP explicitly fosters connections between students' cultural funds of knowledge and disciplinary knowledge to be learned." | In Reference to English Language Learners: For the teacher, being culturally literate (particularly in the cultures of their student population) provides important insight into their student's linguistic and cultural development. It helps them to understand the relationship between cultural context and the use of language. For the student, it's about making language and cultural development relevant and engaging, motivating them to actively participate in their learning and providing them with the opportunity to be valued members of the classroom community and of society.
"...literate culture has become the common currency for social and economic exchange in our democracy, and is the only available ticket to full citizenship.... Membership is automatic if one learns the background information and the linguistic conventions that are needed to read, write, and speak effectively." - Hirsch
Multicultural Education | -The Center for Multicultural Education focuses on research projects and activities designed to improve practice related to important issues related to equity, intergroup relations, and the achievement of students of color. | Lesson Plan Ideas: -Multisensory Lessons are great for lower level grades. -Appreciating and Understanding Hispanic Culture :http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Social_Studies/Multicultural_Education/MUL0202.html -Looking at Different Cultures http://www.edureg.org/cgi-bin/printlessons.cgi/Virtual/Lessons/Social_studies/Multicultural_Education/MUL0008.html
"Culture, ethnic, and language diversity provide the nation and the schools with rich opportunities to incorporate diverse perspectives, issues, and characteristics into the nation and the schools in order to strengthen both."

"Literacy arouses hope, not only in society as a whole but also in the individual who is striving for fulfillment, happiness, and personal benefit by learning how to read and write. Literacy....means far more than learning how to read and write... the aim is to transmit....knowledge and promote social participation." -UNESCO, Institute of Education
