Artist Biography | Lloyd E. Johnson

I was born in Central Illinois where I resided for most of my life. I now live in Tampa, Florida. My formal education led me to careers in engineering and computer science. I have always had an interest in art and I took college elective courses in art, photography and the humanities. Now that I am retired I find I am able to combine the technology learned in my working career with my interest in art and design to create truly unique constructed wall art sculptures. Working in the world of industrial design helped me develop a unique ability to conceptualize images, transform them to practical designs and execute them in real world materials. I have found that the entire development process of creating something from beginning to end gives me great satisfaction in the resulting finished product. Having grown up in the 40’s and 50’ I have been heavily influenced by Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern and futuristic design. I have always had a passion for the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. I like to take the concepts from generations past and apply advanced technology to produce unique, appealing modern works of art. Using state of the art, high tech materials allows me to capture the imagination of the viewer and appeal to the senses through the use of material, texture, geometry, light, color and reflectivity that are often impossible to capture by the constraints of a more conventional media. 4: ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY | Lloyd E. Johnson

My approach to artistic creation is to use quality materials, advanced production techniques and expertise gained from years of manufacturing and computer experience to transform conceptual ideas into objects that I and other art lovers can appreciate and enjoy at a reasonable price. I have often purchased art that I felt was leading edge, inspiring and thought provoking and later found that the artist was more interested in the concept and his or her own artistic expression than in providing a quality piece of work.Sometimes the components used in the finished piece were not of the highest quality, other times quality was lacking in the final assembly or there was little attention to detail. It is my goal to produce art that the owner can be proud to display and share with others. Other times I would have to pass on quality pieces of work because the artist had not been able to offer the work at a reasonable price. I have taken on the challenge of providing quality work while doing the best I can to keep costs in line. When possible, I make every part of every piece of art and art furniture myself. However, It is a constant struggle to keep quality high and costs low. To this end, I draw from the expertise, knowledge and skills of business partners in order to provide quality that meets my own personal standards and yet keep costs in line and keep my art affordable. The concept and execution of a piece from the initial idea to the completed work is always mine. Each piece of wall art is original and unique. My art furniture items are completely hand made and limited edition. Colors and design detail of many pieces can be specified by the customer and commissions are always welcome. Many of the frames on my wall art pieces are made from select hardwoods, hand cut, finished and constructed by myself. Others, like standard picture frames, are purchased from commercial suppliers because they can be procured at far lower cost than if I were to construct them by hand. Likewise, commercial machine shops produce many of the complex aluminum backgrounds for my wall art. The equipment and technology required to produce these high quality pieces is extremely expensive and often prohibits my crafting these parts myself. Utilizing these commercial services help me in my goal to keep quality high, costs down and prices of the finished works lower.

 WALL ART

Acoustic Guitar is a modern rendition of the pipe organ from a bygone era. In this instance the organ pipes are made from ” square aluminum tubing truncated on the ends. These “pipes” have a brushed finish and are coated in polyurethane to preserve the finish. The control knobs are reminiscent of those on a modern acoustic guitar creating the illusion that this creation could be an acoustic organ. The tile is hand cut and layered to produce an interesting crescent in cobalt blue with a bright yellow accent stripe. The three layers that compose the tile are fused into one at 1400 degrees in a glass kiln. The 12" round disk is made of two layers. The substrate layer is black ABS plastic and the coarse carbon fiber weave is black and charcoal gray. The disk is finished in a high gloss polymer. The entire work is mounted on a wooden backing that holds the piece approximately 3/4" off the wall to add dimension and give it the look that it is floating off the wall. $ 495 | "ACOUSTIC ORGAN" | Acoustic Guitar is a modern rendition of the pipe organ from a bygone era.
