FC: Dorothy's House a childhood adventure written for Stephanie

Do you remember the sunny autumn afternoon when we went to the park to feed the ducks . . .

And you asked if we could knock on the door of the little cottage in the woods to see if Dorothy was home?

And I said, “Let’s walk down the yellow brick road, instead, and see if we can see the lion, and the tin man, and the scarecrow?”

We walked along the yellow brick road and talked, and again you asked if we could knock on the door of Dorothy’s cottage. So we went up the steps and you knocked on the door. When no one answered, you whispered, “Maybe Dorothy is sleeping!"

We continued on our journey, walking down to the pond.

We fed bread to the eager ducks . . . | and pointed at turtles sunning themselves on a log . . .

as we walked along the bridge.

Suddenly, the peaceful day changed. The sunny sky turned black as night. The wind began to roar. Dried leaves and debris whipped about in a ferocious haze of flurry. We grabbed each other's hand and raced for the car as quickly as we could. Once inside the car, the rain poured down from the sky and beat against the windshield.

We watched and waited. Heavy raindrops pounded the pond's surface like so many torpedoes. The trees writhed and waved and danced and bowed to the power of the mighty wind.

Soon the rain subsided as quickly as it had begun, and the day was ready for new adventures.

We headed out for our favorite Saturday-afternoon adventure. Do you remember where we went?

As we slurped snow cones, we talked about our adventure in the park, comparing the sudden storm we'd encountered to the tornado in the Wizard of Oz.

And then you smiled and said, "This has been the best day of my life!" And, as always, at that particular moment in time, I could not have agreed with you more!
