FC: The MonoMyth By Grant Conversano
 The Call
At the District 12 reaping "Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it's not me. It's Primrose Everdeen"(Collins 20). Prim, Katniss' sister name was pulled from the reaping jar. Prim would have been sent to the capital to fight to the death on live television. So Katniss is forced volunteer as Tribute or watch her sister get sent to certain death. Katniss steps out in to the crowd "I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!" (Collins 20).
 The Refusal
Even though Katniss Volunteered to be Tribute she refuses to accept the challenge of winning the Hunger Games. Instead she is filled with self doubt, " I can't win the competition will be far beyond my abilities. Kids from wealthier districts, where winning is a huge honor, who've been training their whole lives for this" (Collins 36). It is not until later in the book when Rue, a friend she made in the Hunger Games is about to die, "I'm going to (win). Going to win for the both of us now" (Collins 233).
 Crossing the Threshold
Katniss has lived in District 12 her whole and has never left. "The speed initially takes my breath away. Of course, I've never been on a train, Travel between the districts is forbidden" (Collins 41). So when Katniss is taken to the Capital for the Hunger Games she is literally Crossing the Threshold. Leaving her home, her world and being thrown in to a completely new environment that is the polar opposite of District 12. A place with "black cinder streets"and "squat gray houses" surrounded by "a high chain-link fence"(4). To the Capital where the rich and powerful live, a futuristic society, and where she could be killed for entertainment.
 Supernatural Aid
Katniss' supernatural aid for the book is Haymitch Abernathy a "paunchy, middle-aged man"(Collins 20). Katniss' and Peeta's mentor for the games, Haymitch was the only living victor from District 12. He was first seen falling of the stage drunk during the reaping and later in the book he is also typically found drunk (24). Throughout the book Haymitch is guiding Katniss and Peeta to win the Hunger Games. At first he is with them during their training but later during the games he is with them in their minds, still calling out to them in his cynical way giving direction, "Here's some advice. Stay alive" (56).
 Road of Trails
Katniss goes through many challenges during her Journey. Her first major one is at the Gamemakers' table in the training center when she shoots the apple out of the pigs mouth (Collins 102). This got the Gamemakes' attention and she was rated highly for the games. Her second big obstacle was when she was camping out high in a tree with the Career Tributes closing in below her. With the help of Rue she drops a nest of trackerjackers on them, letting her and Rue escape (190). Lastly, Katniss and Rue destroy the food supply of the Career Tributes that was stashed by lake (220). After that the Careers fell apart, and this all lead up to the Climax which in this case was also the Apotheosis.
 The Goddess
In the Hunger Games the Goddess, herself wasn't a very important character but, its what she gives to katniss that changes the story. The Goddess in my option would be The Mayor's daughter Madge. Before Katniss is swept away to the Capital, Madge comes to say goodbye to Katniss. "They let you wear one thing from your district in the arena. One thing to remind you of home. Will you wear this?" (Collins 38). Madges gives Katniss "her pin" and Katniss promises to wear it, the pin is a gold with a mockingjay in the center, this later becomes the symbol of the whole rebellion, the book would not be the same without the pin (38).
Apotheosis | The only two tributes left are Peeta and Katniss, neither one will kill each other. So when they both agree to eat the deadly nightlock berries together and die together, " The frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts from above them. 'Stop! Stop! Ladies and Gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!'" (345). At that moment Katniss gained power over the capital in that act of defiance. This incident sparks the uprisings of the rebellion against the Capital. This one event took power away from the Capital and gave it too Katniss making her "god like".
Refusal of the Return | On the surface Katniss was overjoyed to return home. She missed District 12, and Prim. Underneath she realized that soon she would have to face Gale and Peeta with the awkward sistuation. That she has been put in; "The idea of seeing Gale in a matter of hours makes my stomach churn... I feel like I've been lying to someone who trusts me" (Collins 371).
Master of Two Worlds | Katniss becomes the Master of Two Worlds when she returns to District 12 and she is crowned victor of the Hunger Games with Peeta. On the surface she is in love with Peeta. On the inside she doesn't know who to pick Gale or Peeta. She is also afraid that President Snow will come after her for using the berries. She becomes a symbol of the uprising rebellion, later in the series. (Collins 373)
