FC: A Hare in the Elephant's Trunk
1: Life in Duk Padiet October 1987 | Jacob was 7 before men of northern Sudan came and attacked his village. He lived with his mama and three of sisters. And his grandmama was the village storyteller | Mama turned her and over and Jacob pried open her fingers. It was a stone, the same blue as mama's dress and it was shaped almost like a heart. ~Pg 7
2: Majok and Oscar | Oscar lived in the neighboring village to Jacob and was his best friend. Oscar was smaller than Jacob but was an amazing soccer player. | Majok was older than Jacob and Oscar and was privileged to attend school. He often made fun of Oscar and Jacob, so the boys nick named him Majok the snake.
3: Uncle Daniel and Cattle Camp | Macar's song: My ebony black Macar Whose horns are as sharp as the thorns of the acacia. He has the power of an angry elephant And the speed and cunning of a hungry lion. The white streak between his eyes is the purest of sweet milk. He is a chief among cows, a most powerful beast. ~Page 25 | Jacob's uncle Daniel was the champion wrestler in all of Dinka land. Daniel also had a beautiful black bull named Macar. He taught Jacob how to count and was also a member of the SPLA
4: Escaping Chaos | "Jacob!" Monyroor grabbed Jacob's hand and began pulling him away from the burning huts, into the smoky darkness of the surrounding forest."Quickly, Little uncle," he said urgently. "We must go, now. Cover your nose and mouth." All around them the popping of gunshots echoed. "But mama, my sisters- what about them?" Jacob cried, digging in his heels. "I cannot leave without them!" "There is no time- we must leave now!" ~Page 36/37 | Monyroor is Jacob's nephew. He is older and has received his gaar (Scars on his forehead to show he is entering manhood).
5: Willy and the Long Journey | After escaping Jacob and Monyroor found along chain of boys walking. They joined the line and found Majok and Oscar were among these marching boys. | After many days of walking they came across a burned down village; they pillaged it for food. Among the ruins Jacob discovered a little boy sitting next to a dog and a dead body. Jacob and Monyroor helped this boy Willy bury his brother. They asked for Willy to join them but he said he wanted to stay and take care of his dog. The boys left and continued the long journey but without directions they circled and returned to Willy's village. This time Willy joined them.
6: Welcome to Ethiopia | After months of walking the line of boys arrived at Pinyudo Refugee Camp. They built themselves shelter out of any extra material they could find, they started going to school and learned from the SPLA. The camp was run y the UN which gave the children clothes and food to eat.Soon after they arrived they were forced out by the government. | Teacher Matthew remained very quiet as the men showed the students how their guns, Kalashnikovs and AK-47's, worked and gave them drills to practice in the event of an attack. ~Page 127
7: Kakuma Refugee Camp | Actual photo from Kakuma | Kakuma was the final refugee camp that Jacob and Willy would stay at. It was the largest camp so far located in the desert of Kenya. There Jacob continued to go to school. Also the 2 boys were reunited with their long lost friend Oscar. Jacob also got a job as a translator and learned some Swahili.
8: Jacob's Determination | After seeing may boys head off to school Jacob knew thats what he also wanted. His only problem was he did not have the money for it. The message he printed in the dirt said simply, "Gone to school..." ~Page 230 | To make the money he needed to go to school Jacob traveled back to Sudan where he received tobacco cones which he later traded for 5 goats. He received these items for teaching their children the alphabet and how to count. When he sold the goats he finally had the money to go to school.
9: When he arrived back at Laiser Hill Academy, Jacob stood outside the iron gate and looked through the bars at the neat white buildings surrounded by leafy green trees. He smiled, swung open the gate, then walked through the heavy front doors of the school once again... "Welcome back Jacob Deng!" Headmaster Wangai greeted him at the door... "Thank you Headmaster. You will not be sorry," Jacob said sincerely I will be one of your very best students- of this I am sure." ~Page 272
10: This here is Jacob today visiting his home town in Duk Padiet. He is with children who are supported through Jacob's charity Wadeng Wings of Hope.
