S: Hawaii Summer 2011
FC: Hawaii | Summer 2011
Our adventure from KCI to Denver, and then from Denver to Honolulu. | My first time flying in an airplane. I was so excited! | The views from the plane were amazing!
The statue we are standing by is of Duke Kahanamoku. He was known as the king of surfing in Honolulu. | After we went to see Duke's statue, we went to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville for dinner! It was a cheeseburger in paradise. | The next day Jordan, Anne, and I went to the mall and on our way there met Zeus the therapy dog.
First time EVER to swim in the ocean! The view was beautiful but I couldn't believe how salty the water was, and it was so blue too! | After a little while Jordan and I found a small sea shell and started looking for more. We laid out and tried to get some sun...but I think the sun got us.
First hiking trip in the mountains - Aiea Loop Trail
Jordan, Terry, Gina, Christina and I after we had all jumped from the falls on our hike. | Maunawili Falls Hiking Trail. In Hawaiian "Maunawili" means twisted mountains. | Jordan and I freezing after our second jump off the falls.
Fish we saw while snorkeling at Sharks Cove | This was a school of about 50 fish that we followed for awhile before we returned to look at other things.
Jordan and I went parasailing! They put us almost 700 feet in the air, and then lowered us into the water and took us back up again! It was so much fun.
Our second week in Hawaii, I met Michelle who was a friend of Terry's. We all went to her boyfriend Eric's house. | Eric's house was right by the ocean. We had a barbeque and did some boogy-boarding
A few days later we went up to the Pearl Harbor Historic Site and Museums. We saw things like the U.S.S Bowfin, the U.S.S Arizona and its memorial.
"Don't Tread on Me" | While we were on the Bowfin, I steered us around the ocean a bit. I'm practically a captain now. | Jordan on the U.S.S Bowfin looking through the telescope | Heading down into the Bowfin to see inside the submarine | On board the U.S.S Bowfin! | Taking a nap on the cot in the bunks
While we were at Pearl Harbor we saw a video about the bombing and what ships were sunk. After the video we went on a boat out to the U.S.S Arizona Memorial. The memorial was built on the water over the sunken Arizona ship. When we were on the memorial we saw parts of the ship and oil still leaking up from the tanks, even after 70 years of being underwater. We also saw the memorial wall of all the men that died on the ships during Pearl Harbor.
After we saw the memorial we walked around some more and then found a silly sign as well as a cool gift shop where we met "Rosie"
We went to Diamond Head State Monument mountain. The view from the top was beautiful. | We saw the Diamond Head Crater once we reached the top of the mountainside. | The day we went I looked up and there was a ring around the sun. It was a crazy sight. | Jordan and her dad as we took a break on our hike to snap a few pictures.
View from the top. | Terry being silly. | A hideout built on the crater. | Jordan and I in the tunnel. | View with the lighthouse. | Me halfway up to the top.
We went on another hike that was close to Kokohead and saw a mother sea turtle and her baby, as well as a lighthouse, and a bunch of cactus.
While we were there we island hopped to the Big Island and stayed on the Hilo side and saw some amazing things!
During our visit to Hilo we stayed at the Hawaii Volcano National Park . While we were there we went to Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, went ziplining, and rode an ATV trail.
While we stayed at the Hawaii National Volcano Park, we went up the road to the Volcano Observatory and saw the steam vents and the crater. | The crater at the observatory is 1000 meters in length, and is known as the "Lava Lake" when an eruption occurs.
We went into the museum at the observatory and learned tons of things about volcanos. The last two photos are of lava when it explodes in the air to create Pele's Hair.
While in Hilo Terry took us to go ziplining and see the Botanical Gardens. We were attached to harnesses and then to a wire where we "zipped" down a wire from an incline. We also saw some rainbow eucalyptus trees and other exotic plants.
Bromelia Plant | A small fall on our hike | Terry and Jordan by the falls | Another small fall | Terry on our hike | Pink Calla Lily breed
We went to a black sand beach and saw a sea turtle. After that we went on an ATV trail ride and played in King Kam's waterfall.
This is everyone on our ATV trail ride before we swam in King Kamehameha's falls. The valley in the main picture is a home to Hawaiian natives who cultivate the land by hand and live without running water, electricity, and rarely leave the valley.
Chris took us on a dinner cruise, it was awesome and the view was beautiful!
The next day Jordan and I went to Paradise Cove for a traditional Hawaiian luau. | We got to wear orchid flower leis and got oil pastel tattoos. Then there was a show of netting the fish.
