8: INTRODUCTION This exhibition features nearly all the images of the cross in the TIS Collection made by the artist and designer for program or client use. One is struck first by the variety of imagery. Then, when taking in all the 206 works in a vast catalogue, one is reminded how the artist keeps coming back to the image of the cross as a fountainhead of inspiration in a virtual sea of kaleidoscopic stills. There is no one style, school, or symptomatic response to attribute his work to any regional, national, ideological or age-based approach. These multi-faceted images of the cross, while undoubtedly the original work of a 20-21C artist, are first and last a testament to faith that goes against cultural grains in a post-modern world. For by and large his draw to render faith images is an outgrowth of Marshall Thomas's Lutheran, Episcopal and theosophist studies, coupled with his facination with cultural history. They show an artist's reliance upon faith without having to prove God's ever-present hand in the work. Further, they persuade the beholder of a truth without having to convince anyone to describe the holy in their midst. This illuminator, more than any other, points to the position a post-modern Christian disciple and aesthetic determinist must take to underpin a cogent testimony to an art world that largely dismisses what it calls a notion that there is one order in the universe, one great cause to serve.
