1: Setting | The Story takes place in Europe. The action starts in Paris, France and eventually for most of the book moves to Spain. In Pamplona Spain the Bulfights occur
2: Jake Barnes | "Couldn't we live together Brett, couldn't we just live together."
3: Jake is the protagonist. In World War One he was wounded and paralyzed. Jake is in love with Brett Ashley. Unfortunately for Jake, Brett cannot deal with the fact that Jake cannont have sex, and moves on. | "Nobody ever lives their lives all the way except bull fighters"
4: Lady Brett Ashley | Brett Ashley is very promiscuous. She is the character that causes most of the conflict in this book. She tries to act strong, and independent, but ends up dejected.
5: Cohn | Cohn is insecure. He is rich and Jewish. He loves Brett, feels like the other male characters bully him. He gets in a fight with Jake He is also betrayed by Brett. | " I can't stand to think my life is going so fast, that I am not really living it."
6: Other Characters | Bill Gorton- a World War 2 American Veteran, funny, friends with Jake. Also a heavy drinker Mike Campbell- short time fiancé of Brett. A drunk and a war Veteran from Europe. Mike has gone through his money and is angry. Pedro Romero- 19 year old bullfighter thatB Brett falls in love with. He is content with his life and seems happy and successful.
7: Sequence of Events | -In Paris, Cohn is trying to convince Jake to go to South America, Jake gets annoyed -Jake runs into Lady Brett Ashley at a club. They met at war. Brett loves Jake but due to Jake being paralyzed in the war she won't consider him. -Cohn starts to fall for Brett, upset when he finds out she is engaged to Mike Campbell -Brett, arm in arm with a rich Greek tells Jake she is leaving for San Sebastian Spain. -Jake, Bill and Cohn travel to Pamplona Spain, and party. -Bullfighting fiesta begins. Mike jealous of flirtation with Cohn and Brett -Brett falls in love with young bullfighter Pedro -Cohn attack Jake and Mike -Romero and Brett go to Madrid -Jake meets Brett in Madrid. Brett and Romero break up -Brett wants to be with Jake, he says "Yes, isn't it pretty to think so."
8: Dear Jake, Please come meet me in Madrid .. I miss you dearly . Things between Romero and I didn't work out. Love, Brett
9: TO SPAIN
10: CONFLICT | -The Conflict is surrounded by Brett. Brett is loved by Jake, Mike, Cohn and Romero. However Brett is promiscuous. -Bullfighting represents, the chaos, and fighting surrounded by Brett. - All of the character besides Romero are lost and are searching for happiness
11: Jake finds himself in a constant struggle with other characters for the love of Brett. At the end Brett finally wants to settle with Jake, but her actions cause Jake to reject her offer | Problem & Solution | Throughout the whole novel, characters feeling the need to find themselves is a core message. However, in the end, all the characters are still wandering aimlessly trying to find themselves | X
12: Compared to Gatsby... | -Both are in first person -Both set in the 1920's -Both show how widespread promiscuity was -Both Hemingway and Ftizgerald were well known authors -Both show effect of World War One -Lost generation is significant in both stories -Great symbolism, new era of less complex writing
13: Heningway's Influence | -Hemingway came back from War in 1919 with mental trauma | -Married and moved to Paris. Became friends with Miro, Picsso and other artists.
14: Historical Context THE LOST GENERATION | This book directly correlates to The Lost Generation in the 1920's. The Lost Generation consisted of war veterans who felt lost after the hardships of the war. This led to increased travel, promiscuity and sadness. People lost faith, trust was lost and happiness was lost. Jake and others in this book represent war veterans struggle to find love and happiness, like the Lost Generation.
