20: When you were 5 months old we started to notice a couple abnormalities with your development. Your left eye was not always in alignment with your right eye, and you were not using your left arm/hand. I mentioned these to your doctor at your 6 month check up and she referred us to an ophthalmologist, Dr. Tufty, a pediatric neurologist, Dr. Bunch, and a program called Birth to Three Connections. After months of evaluations and doctor appointments, you had an MRI. It was discovered that you had schizencephaly. For you this means that the right side of your brain did not develop properly. The right side of the brain controls the movement of the left side of the body, which explains why you didn't use your left side. On November 3, 2010 you had an eye surgery to try and correct the alignment of your eyes. Dr. Tufty did the surgery at Sanford Hospital. It was a same day surgery. We went in about 5 a.m. and were out by 12 p.m. You did such a great job with the anesthesia and recovery! You were back to your normal cheerful self the next day! Dr. Tufty did have us continue patching your right eye for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, in order to strengthen the left eye. Through Birth to Three Connections we were set up with both an occupational therapist, Nikki Larson, and a physical therapist, Wilza Schmied. Nikki and Wilza both came to our house to work with you once a week. Through referrals from your therapists we also began seeing Dr. Johnson at Children's Care Hospital. Dr. Johnson worked primarily on your left leg, making sure that you were able to stand and walk with your foot in the proper form. She had you fitted for a leg brace which you wore for standing and walking. Dr. Johnson also helped us with getting a removable cast. The cast's purpose was for restraint therapy. The idea was that if we restrained your right arm, you would be forced to use your left arm. We were hoping for better, more immediate results with the cast. The problem was that you could still use your arm, and you HATED the cast. I was too tenderhearted and the cast wasn't used as often as it should have been!
