Dana appears in a red headed boy’s room holding drapes that was on fire. She puts out the fire and discovers that the boys is Rufus and that he is a few years older than when she first transported back in time. Rufus remembers that Dana is the one saved her from drowning all those years ago. He also remembers that before he went under, he saw Dana sitting in her apartment and unpacking books. Rufus says he set fire to the drapes because his father beat him. He shows her the welts on his back, and she notices old scars underneath the fresh wounds. He tells her that they are in Maryland, and that it is the year 1815.

5: He says his last name is Weylin and confirms that he has a young black friend, a free woman, named Alice Greenwood. When Dana hears these names, she realizes that Rufus is her ancestor. Rufus tells Dana that she would be safe at Alices house. He helps her sneak out of the house, and she helps him destroy the burnt curtains. Dana makes her way through the wood, avoiding the white guards and when she gets to Alice house she sees a black man getting dragged out the house. They tie him to a tree, beat him then take him away. He turns out to be Alice dad. The guard sees Dana, mistaken her for Alice mother twin, and takes her into the wood and attempts to rape her. Kevin comes for Dana, and they talk. She explains that she is worried he will be left behind if she gets dizzy when he is not around. Privately, she also worries that some taint from the past would rub off on Kevin if he is forced to play the role of a white slave owner. Kevin tells Dana that the doctor set Rufus's leg, and that Weylin has hired Kevin to teach Rufus while he recuperates. Kevin has told Weylin that he is a writer from New York and that he bought Dana because he thought her education might be useful to him. He also implied that he is sleeping with Dana. He warns Dana that Weylin resents her education. Dana hopes she and Kevin will be able to prevent Rufus from turning into his father. In the end of this chapter Dana gets caught reading to Nigel, she gets whipped and sent back to 1976, without Kevin.
