3: Oak Bluffs is the center of the historic African American community on Martha's Vineyard. It is the first black-oriented resort in the country. Historians say that much of the land owned by blacks was bought during the depression by the domestic workers who came with the white families for the summer. Later, as their children and grand-children became some of the most prominent African American leaders in the country, they became host to famous black writers, politicians, judges and artists. | The famed Inkwell beach is located in Oak Bluffs. Some say it was named by Harlem Renaissance writers who came to the Vineyard and found inspiration near the water and thus named the beach 'The Inkwell".

20: In the 1930s Oak Bluffs became the center of 19th Century Methodist movement. Members of the Methodist church would come each summer to pitch their tent and have open air Christian revivals. As the meetings became more popular, returning visitors began replacing their tents with small wooden houses with ornate molding and bright colors, known as Gingerbread cottages. Many of the 312 gingerbread-style houses have been passed down from generation to generation; the land on which they sit is owned communally.
22: Gingerbread Houses of Martha's Vineyard | For sale: Extremely bright pink house in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard. Gingerbread cottage style, built circa 1864, 2 bedrooms, 770 square feet. Exterior has 14 different kinds of filigree trim, including many pink hearts. Price includes pink wall-to-wall carpeting and pink and white furnishings, but no land, no insulation, hardly any storage space, creaky slanted floor. Seller requests that buyer keep the house pink. Buyer must be willing to tolerate tourists peeping through the windows at all hours.
24: Each year residents of the Campground hold what is called "The Grand Illumination". For one special night (usually in August) residents place ornate Chinese lanterns around each gingerbread cottage. The lanterns remain dark until after dusk. At an appointed hour, people gather in the Tabernacle for a sing-along. At the end all the lights go out and thousands of Chinese lanterns spring to life in a brilliant cascade of light through out the campground. The celebration ends after visitors walk through the campground enjoying the sights and sounds.
