Interphase is the period between cell divisions, and is the longest phase in the cell cycle. It is made up of G1, S, and G2. G1- The cell doubles in size. S- DNA is copied. G2- Organelles are copied.
Chromosomes | Centromere | Spindle Fibers | Nuclear Membrane
Prophase is the first and longest phase of mitosis. During prophase the chromosomes coil up, centrioles take their place at the poles of the cell, & chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers. At the end of prophase, the nucleolus & nuclear membrane dissolve.
Metaphase is the shortest phase of mitosis. During metaphase the chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell, and the centromeres attach to the spindle fibers.
During anaphase the centromeres split, and the chromosomes part to move towards the poles.
Telophase is the last phase of mitosis. The chromosomes begin to uncoil back into chromatin.
Cytokinesis, or the division of cytoplasm, occurs.
The process of Meiosis produces gamete cells. There are 2 rounds of cell division, resulting in 4 gametes.
Mitosis vs. Meiosis | Mitosis 1 round of cell division. Produces 2 identical daughter cells, which are diploid. | Meiosis 2 rounds of cell division. Produces gametes, which are haploid.
