FC: Of Mice and Men Soundtrack
 By Alex Hondros
Track 1: Southern Man - Neil Young This hard rock song is all about southern men working to live live in the south and the hardships of surviving the conditions. I believe this song is a great explanation of the general theme in Of Mice and Men; George and Lennie doing what they need to for work, having no place to call home. Track 2: You've Got a Friend In Me - Randy Newman This well known song from the Disney movie Toy Story is about friendship and how a friend is always there. I believe this is a perfect song to symbolize the strong friendship between George and Lennie. George is always there for Lennie no matter what because that's what friends are for.
Track 3: Stand By Me - Ben E. King This passionate song speaks the soul when it comes to companionship, it sings of how you can never be afraid as long as your best mate is right by your side. I think this song is a great representation of George and Lennie's friendship from Lennie's point of view. Lennie trusts George with his life. For example, when George told Lennie to jump in the water, even though he couldn't swim he knew he'd be fine because George was right there beside him. Track 4: You Can't Judge a Book By It's Cover - Bo Diddley This song has a great beat but an even better moral, "you can't judge a book by its cover." I thought that this song goes great with how George told Lennie not to talk when they met their new boss. He did this because he wanted the boss not to judge Lennie by his mental abilities, but by his skills in wheat bucking.
Track 5: We are the Champions - Queen This celebratory song is about victory and championship. I found that this song best relates to Lennie's victory in the fight Curly made the mistake of starting. Track 6: When You're Gone - Avril Lavigne This emotion filled song is about the melancholy feelings of loneliness when you lose someone. I believe that this song is a great representation of how Candy felt when he decided it was time to put his dog down. Also, this song is perfect for describing to feelings George felt after he had to make the hardest decision of his life and shoot Lennie. The loneliness of his once closest companion was no longer alive and that he was responsible.
Track 7: Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie This song has a great tune, but the words are what is most important. It is all about the pressure from the hard decisions we have to make throughout life and how that pressure can feel like and actual force pushing down on you. I feel this song does a great job at representing the feeling of George when he had to make the decision to shoot Lennie in order to save him from a much worse fate.
