31: To the Class of 2011, As you prepare to start your careers in medicine remember that some of the secrets to success in our profession were first spoken many years in the past. Here are two of my favorites. The first is one I gave you just before you started your rotations last summer. It is a quote from Ambroise Pare who was a French surgeon who died in 1590. He was the great official royal surgeon for the Kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III and is considered as one of the fathers of surgery. He said "Guérir quelquefois, soulager souvent, consoler toujours," which means "Cure occasionally, relieve often, comfort always." The second quote pretty much sums up all of PA school. It is attributed to the 18th century philosopher, Samuel Johnson. He said, “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it.” I wish each of you happiness and success in your careers as PAs. John Cavenagh, PA-C, PhD
