24: Cochimi Indians were the first people to harvest the rich sea life surrounding Punta Abreojos. In the mid fifteenth century Spanish explorers named the point "Punta Abrejos", the point "keep your eyes open" due to the many dangerous reefs in the area. These same reefs, which have claimed many ships have also protected the very productive waters around this point by keeping larger foreign fishing vessels away. In the late 1920's Abuelo Arce and his father traveled from San Ignacio over a hundred miles on mule and became the first residents of the future town of Punta Abreojos. They established the fishing cooperative in1946. | HISTORY

32: FUTURE PRODUCTS | ___PUNTA ABREOJOS | OYSTERS AND ESTERO COYOTE | Punta Abreojos operates a major oyster farm in Estero Coyote located 10 miles from town. Appropriately named for the coyotes who frequently swim to the many mangrove islands in order to hunt. Estero Coyote is ideal for the cultivation of oysters. It's pristine and remote location, relatively small size with few deep channels and a large inlet mouth or "boca" allows for the exchange of all of the sea water in the lagoon twice daily, verses once daily for most lagoons that cultivate oysters. This immense tidal action guarantees a deliciously clean, fat, fresh and the absolute best oyster around. | ESTERO COYOTE____ | OYSTER BEDS___ | ___PROCESSING PLANT
