Rose and Derek's Wedding - Page Text Content

We got married in Canadensis, Pennsylvania, about two hours northwest of New York City. | We reserved three mountain lodges for the wedding, and for our guests. | WEDD | The lodges were owned by the Spruce Lake Retreat, a Mennonite retreat and conference center, where we had been celebrating Thanksgiving for several years with Derek's family.

The wedding took place on the 25th of November, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It was cold outside, but (luckily for those driving in) it didn't snow the whole weekend. | Canadensis is nestled deep in the Pocono mountains. The woodlands are full of waterfalls, wild turkeys, and mountain streams.

We started Saturday morning with a big breakfast. Max fried the pancakes (oatmeal walnut and vegan chocolate chip). | My dad cut up lots of ruby red grapefruits (smuggled in from Texas in my mother's suitcase)

Saturday night more guests arrived. We had a Tex-Mex dinner: black bean & sweet potato burritos, salsa, guacamole, and salad. For dessert, Katrina brought an assortment of lovely vegan cookies.

 Game Night

Next we played several rounds of the not quite Newlywed Game. | We tried a number of pairings: couples, siblings, and colleagues/officemates. Who knew each other the best? Officemates | Kathy started the games off with a homemade, wedding-themed "Mad Libs".

We started Sunday off with a hearty breakfast—fresh bagels from Ess-a-Bagel in New York City. | Bagels

After everyone was fed, it was time to get ready for the ceremony.

Our Ketubah (Jewish wedding contract) has a modern, romantic English text. But the Hebrew text says that Derek bought Rose for two goats, or something like that.

The Ketubah had to be signed by us and by two witnesses. It took a long time because no one was used to signing their name in Hebrew!

It's going to take a bit longer. | Everything is ready. We're just waiting for the witnesses to sign the Ketubah. | Susan helps Rose memorize her Hebrew vows.

Upstairs, Rose finally signs the Ketubah. The ceremony can begin!

We walked down the aisle to the the 2nd movement of Bach's Gamba Sonata No. 3 in G minor.

The ceremony took place under the chuppah, which symbolizes the home that we will build together.

 Sheva | Bruchot

Dinner was all homemade: butternut squash sage lasagna, cauliflower-leek kugel with almond-herb crust, garlicky collard greens, barbecued tofu, and five seed quinoa salad.

Rose and Derek’s Farewell Song written by John with a little help from his friends sung by John and Dimitra He first saw her in a computer nook Then he came back quickly for a second look. He tasted tofu with her special sauce And knew that he had found his lifetime boss. Rose once saw Derek singing in a choir She thought him nice, but there was no fire. Then he grew his beard and she took the plunge Now she’s in so deep that she’s a little Dreyer. So they’re on their way, gone to work and play Auf wiedersehen is what we have to say Ach du liebe, cause by now it’s lookin’ Like we’ll see you next year in Saarbrucken. Bicycles and roller blades are lots of fun When Montreal by accident lets through the sun. Piano keys with cello, or a special game Plus a movie and a tempeh burger on a bun.

We do not comprehend what it is you do Derek talks to computers in ones and twos. Rose programs machines with designer genes But for sure we understand the words “I do”. So they’re on their way, gone to work and play Auf wiedersehen is what we have to say Ach du liebe, cause by now it’s lookin’ Like we’ll see you next year in Saarbrucken. Shakespeare got it right when he said that Rose Would retain her beauty with another name. So excuse my ditty ‘cause it’s only prose And my sense of humor is a little lame. So they’re on their way, gone to work and play Auf wiedersehen is what we have to say Ach du liebe, cause by now it’s lookin’ Like we’ll see you next year in Saarbrucken. I have heard that German cooking’s best at its wurst Now here comes Rosa, probably the first. To rate veggie munching in Deuts-ch-land And create a frozen tofu schnitzel wurst.

We couldn't make up our minds about which flavor of cake to order, so we ended up getting three: carrot cake, orange cheesecake, and "busy bee" (marzipan chocolate). Decisions, decisions, which cake to cut first?
