BC: WE ARE RWANDAN!

FC: Richard Rwanda Impuhwe

1: Richards Rwanda is a group of high school students who are working together to support Rwandan girls’ education. We provide financial support to low-income girls in the rural area of Nyamata to enable them to complete their primary education and 6 years of secondary school. Through the completion of their education, we hope to enhance their ability to earn income and become leaders in their community. In 1994 a genocide in Rwanda took the lives of over one million people. Many children lost their parents and stopped attending school because they could not afford it. Richard’s Rwanda is helping 40 girls in Nyamata, Rwanda by supplying them with what they need in order to attend school. Eventually, we hope to build a library or learning center for the girls we are supporting and the next generations. | IMPUHWE COMES FROM THE KINYARWANDA WORD FOR "Compassion"

58: Rwanda “Land of a Thousand Hills” is located in the heart of Africa. Bordering to the north is Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, Tanzania to the east and Burundi to the South. From April – July 1994, Rwandan genocide attempted to wipe out the entire Tutsi population. Over 800,000 people were slaughtered throughout the country. Every single Rwandan was affected one way or another by the genocide. Thousands of children were left without families. The current president is Paul Kagame, who was in charge of the RPF (Rwandan Patriotic Front) that stopped the genocide. The president is a Tutsi and a voice of reconciliation throughout the country. The Rwandan people speak very highly of the president. Clearly Mr. Kagame has been an incredible leader and is doing a superb job of healing his country.

71: Since being invited in 2005 by the Rwandan government to work in underserved areas, PIH has brought quality health care to 800,000 people in three rural districts that previously had only one doctor and no functioning hospitals. Together with our Rwandan sister organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Kinyarwanda for Partners In Health), PIH now works at three district hospitals and 37 health centers. Building off of PIH’s approach in Haiti, the project was designed as a comprehensive primary health care model within the public sector. The approach used HIV/AIDS prevention and care as the entry point to build capacity to address the major health problems faced by the local population. Our Haitian physicians, nurses, and managers traveled to Rwanda extensively in the early years of the program to provide training and program design assistance. These projects are done in partnership with the Government of Rwanda and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). In Rwanda, PIH rebuilds hospitals; capacitates health centers; provides essential medicines, supplies and equipment; recruits, trains, and retains staff; establishes a network of community health workers who are trained and supervised by the public health system; and develops a robust referral and transport network integrating these three levels of care as a comprehensive service delivery platform. | PARTNERS IN HEALTH PAUL FARMER
