S: 2011 SCOTLAND Fortnight Adventure VOLUME II

BC: You take the High Road and we'll take the Low Road and we'll be in Scotland before ye.

FC: 2011 Scotland Fortnight An adventure too big to fit in just one book VOLUME II

When last we saw our intrepid travelers, Matt & Cheryl were wending their way thru Scotland. Driving hellbent on the wrong side of the road but on the right side of adventure....

This obelisk type sculpture is made entirely of dry fit stone (no mortar). Could be a winter project at Flanagan. How hard could it be?

A rill runs through it... | The exotic tropical ferns have to kept under glass in this geodesic dome greenhouse

Attadale had lots of interesting art & sculpture like this boar. The garden was rich and beautiful -- not in need of extra stuff. But the owners must like it and that's why we make gardens, right? They're for us. Cheryl says Attadale was one of the most impressive gardens because it unfolded like a story.

The Road to Applecross. Like the sign says, it ain't for beginners. They call it 'single track'. Some called it dangerous. We called it a rollercoaster of fun with peril around every turn. I loved this road.

Twisty turny up and over the pass. Whee! Cheryl kept telling me to slow down which clearly meant "Go faster!". Fortunately, there was no brake on her side and a gas pedal on mine.

At the top of the pass was this wonderful vista of weather coming in from all directions. People seem to be in the habit of stacking stones so we did too. What amazing stone stacking skill we have!

 Welcome to Applecross Inn

Cheryl introduces her Daily Grapefruit tradition to the quizzical Scots. "What? Ya ne be havin' some daylishus blood sausage? A wee bit o haggis pairhaps?" Not this morning, thanks.

Sadly, time to leave picturesque Applecross. But it's back over the Fun Highway. Just as much fun on the return trip too.

The seaport of Oban! Our last stop before heading home. The Kimberly Hotel greets us but the owners are away for the weekend leaving a chubby barefoot hostess with drooling kid in tow. Lovely view. But the hotel needs some TLC that only home restorers like us would notice. | Went to the distillery but they were lined up for tomorrow's tour. Not us this time. Seen four, seen 'em all.

Off to little Gigha Island by landing craft ferry where the smiling Captain snaps a salute to us as we disembark. We salute back.

Surprise, another garden! Last one so buck up Matt. Cheryl says this garden was not in good repair but it had been an amazing collection of almost tropical of plants. We hiked all over hells half acre. Afterwards we had a $25 cheese sandwich at the pub. A ballsy seagull flew off with most of it.

Achamore Garden was founded by the Sir James Horlick to grow Rhodies but the island has a long history as part of a 500 year old clan feud between the MacDonalds and the McNeills. The McNeill clan won. (watch yer backs laddies!)

Climbing a rise, we get a view from the backside of Achamore Garden. You can see the Isle of Islay and Jura across the water.

June 10. Last night in Oban. Last night in Scotland. We packed a lot into our fortnight vacation. It was a wonderful adventure together and lots of fun. Even better than we expected. And like the best of trips, it left us dreaming about our return trip to Scotland. It really did.
