FC: STOP Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy is a big issue in the United States, luckily it is decreasing. getting pregnant at a young age affects teens in many ways. Teen pregnancy not only affects the teens but also the baby. Due to that fact that teens are getting pregnant, there is a higher risk of premature birth and low birth weight. I believe that if you don't know the full responsibilities of being sexually active then don't have sex.
The highest percentage in teen pregnancy, in the year 1991 was Blacks. The lowest percentage in the year 1991 was whites. The highest percentage of teen pregnancy in the year 2009 is Hispanics, the lowest is whites.
the main reasons why teens get pregnant these days is because of the media. The main causes are TV, Internet, News, Clothing, etc. Also teens life at school affects their decisions a lot. 75% of girls and over half of boys report that girls who have sex do so because their boyfriends want them to. That sounds more like peer pressure, the teen could also stop the situation from happening, but they choose not to. Teenagers who grew up in poverty, poor school performance, growing up in a single parent household, having a mom who was a teen mother, also a sibling that has become pregnant as a teen.
More than 85% of teen pregnancies are unplanned. The biggest risk for teen mothers is delaying prenatal care or worse, 7.2% recieved no care at all. One of teen pregnancy problems is the use of alcohol/drugs also cigarette smoking. Today nearly 20% of pregnant teens use tobacco, nearly 20% use alcohol and nearly 6% use illegal drugs. pregnant teens who drink double their chances of having a baby born with, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Since the teen is still growing herself the baby and her need nutrition. If the baby gets alcohol through it's mother it may be born with FAS.
Pregnant teens tend not to finish high school nor go to college. Only a third of teen mothers earn their High school diploma. Only 1.5% have a college degree by the age of 30. Also in 1955 only 6% of teen pregnancy occurred outside of marriage, today it's 42%.
Personally I am against teen pregnancy. I strongly believe that children should not be having children. I also believe that most teens get pregnant because they believe it is cool, I base my opinion off personal experience. But the matter of the fact is teen pregnancy is not cool it's unfair. why should a child have to suffer because someone did not think before they played. I believe you should have a child when you know how to take care of your self first. If you do not know how to take care of yourself then you shouldn't be having sex.
Teen pregnancy is preventable by abstinence, protection, birth control, etc.
