FC: Eddie and Teena's Handfasting | Greensboro, NC | March 31, 2012 | Bicentennial Gardens
Since ancient times, people have communed with nature to learn more about themselves by example. Since it is within nature that we all do abide, we ask for Teena and Edward the blessings of Nature's Elements, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. We do this that they may fully come to understand the lessons each element has to offer. The attributes of which are examples of those aspects they mirror not only within divinity but within ourselves as well.
Blessed be this union with the gifts of the East and the element of Air, for openness and breath, communication of the heart, and purity of the mind and body. From the east you receive the gift of a new beginning with the rising of each Sun, and the understanding that each day is a new opportunity for growth. | Blessed be this union with the gifts of the South and the element of fire, for energy, passion, creativity and the warmth of a loving home. From the fire within you generate light, which you will share with one another in even the darkest of times.
Blessed be this union with the gifts of the West, the element of water, for your capacity to feel emotion. In marriage you offer absolute trust to one another, and vow to keep your hearts open in sorrow as well as joy. | Blessed be this union with the gifts of the North, the element of earth, which provides sustenance, fertility and security. The earth will feed and enrich you, and help you to build a stable home to which you may always return.
Blessed be this union with the gifts of the Sun, which shine upon you with prosperity, success, and protection. From the sun comes satisfaction and happiness in friendship, love, and marriage. | Blessed be this union with the gifts of the Moon, who watches over us all, even when unseen. Ever changing, ever constant she gives the gift of mystery and compassion that you may never tire of one another, though your love last an eternity.
We pause now to remember all those close to us who, for whatever reason, cannot be here with us today. As rosemary is a symbol of remembrance, they will plant this rosemary bush at their home, to always remember them.
The circle is a very powerful and meaningful shape. As Maynard James Keenan puts it: "A circle is the reflection of eternity. It has no beginning and it has no end- and if you put several circles over each other, then you get a spiral." Teena and Edward feel there is no better way to get married than in the middle of a circle surrounded by their loved ones.
Family, Friends and all the precious moments we share are very important to them. I am sure that you are all very happy to be here with them, but they wanted very much to express how deeply grateful they are to have you all here today, finally all together in the same city and in their lives. It is a blessing beyond compare. Although this is their day, it is also a tribute to all of you. All of you nearest and dearest to them supply them with different aspects of that which they will need to accomplish their goal of living a long and happy life together. For knowing you and interacting with you has helped make Teena and Edward who they are today as individuals, and as a couple. It is from you whom they can seek counsel in times of difficulty, and in whom they see the embodiment of their hopes and dreams for the future. You are like the personal record keepers of times and places and events in their lives. They would like to thank you for that. Each one of you is an important piece of their story. Without all of you sharing in these events, our memories would lose the scents and colors, and flavors and emotions that keep them vibrant and alive. Without all of you the past would fade to black and white over time, so please remember that your presence here is a vital part of this celebration. You all hold a place in their hearts reserved for those they have chosen to call ‘family’.
| Will you who are present here today surround this couple in love, offering them the joys of friendship? At times of joy, will you celebrate with them, nourishing their love for one another? (Guests respond, “We will”) The bonds that Teena and Edward are making today are sacred and holy, and should not be broken. But nearly every relationship is tested at one point or another, by conflict, temptation, strife, and change. Will you, their loved ones, family, and friends, agree to help them keep those bonds holy, reminding them of their love for one another, and helping them cross through those stressful periods? (Guests respond, “We will”)
Trials will come, and tests, for there is much in this world that would long to pull you apart. Do you bring the strength and vision to your relationship, courage and understanding? I do. Joys will come, graces and blessings will warm your souls and give you wonder. Do you bring thanksgiving and rejoicing to this relationship, laughter and abandon? I do. Do you, Edward, take Teena to be your beloved partner, to love, honor, and cherish? I do. Do you, Teena, take Edward to be your beloved partner, to love, honor, and cherish? I do.
As this knot is tied, so are your lives now bound. Woven into this cord, imbued into its very fibers, are all the hopes of your friends and family, and of yourselves, for your new life together. With the fashioning of this knot do I tie all the desires, dreams, love, and happiness wished here in this place to your lives for as long as you both shall live. Two entwined in love, bound by commitment and fear, sadness and joy, hardship and victory, all of which brings strength to this union. Hold tight to one another through both good times and bad, and watch as your strength grows. As your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust. Above you are the stars and below you is the earth. Like the stars, your love should be a constant source of light, and like the earth, a firm foundation from which to grow.
Red, violet, and pink for passion, romance, and love eternal. | Green, gold, and blue for abundance, happiness, and truthfulness. | Brown, silver, and grey for grounding, wisdom, and to weather the storms.
The rings that these two will give each other will be a reminder of their love, and the vows they have made here today. As an important and loved member of their lives, you were each asked to bless the rings and give your support for their marriage as you entered.
Edward, I have not the right to bind you to Teena, only you have this right. If it be your wish, say so at this time and place your ring in her hand.. | It is my wish. | Teena, if it be your wish for Edward to be bound to you, place the ring on his finger. | Teena, I have not the right to bind you to Edward, only you have this right. If it be your wish, say so at this time and place your ring in his hand. | It is my wish. | Edward, if it be your wish for Edward to be bound to you, place the ring on her finger.
: As the Lord and Lady are separate yet one, so have your pledges made you. Drink now of one another’s love and know that you will never again thirst in your heart or in mind, for what each of you lacks the other has to give and the well spring of love flows eternally for those who drink often of its waters. SARAH: As food and drink nourish the body, so does love feed the soul of marriage. Feed now one another, feed forevermore the spirit of your union and be filled always. | Teena and Edward, look around at your guests, and really remember this moment. Remember the powerful feeling of not only your own love, but the love of your friends and family.
Edward and Teena, in the presence of this company, you have spoken the vows and performed the rites which unite your lives. Therefore I pronounce you joined together as partners in life, love, and the spirit. Now you may seal your commitment with a kiss.
