 The Great Depression

What caused the Great Depression ? Thee were five major things that caused the Great Depression. 1.The Stock Market Crash of 1929: took place in October 29,1929.Many predicted that the Stock market was going to fail.Unfortunately this happened and two months after the crash the stockholders had lost more the 40 billion dollars.Even though they were regaining just a little bit from what they had lost by the 1930s,America had to face it, they were entering the Great Depression. | 2.Bank Failures Through the 1930s more 9,000 banks failed. Many people who had invested their money in banks lost all of it since all the banks shut down.Surviving banks, unsure of the economic situation and concerned for their own survival, stopped being as willing to create new loans.

3.Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board When all of this took place, people from different classes, stopped purchasing products. This then caused many employers to lose their jobs because it was not necessary for factories to produce more things because there was no use for it. So many employers lost their jobs because the owners couldn't pay them anything. The unemployment rate rose above 25% which meant, of course, even less spending to help alleviate the economic situation.

 4. American Economic Policy with Europe As business began failing the government created the Smoot-Howley Tariff in 1930 to help protect American companies. This charged a high tax for imports leading to less trade between America and other Foreigner countries. 5.Drought Conditions This was a not a direct cause for the great depression. The drought in Mississippi valley occurred in 1930 was of such proportions that they couldn't pay debts and they had to sell their farms because they had no other remedies.

How long did the Great Depression Last? The Great Depression lasted 1930 from 1939.

3.What was life like during the Great Depression? Life was very hard during the great depression. It wasn't anything easy, many people lost their jobs, | home and etc. Many people ended up living in the streets. Some had to build tents, shacks and some didn't have places to sleep. Many suffered from hunger.

girl cooking food | Family walking on the road | unemployed men in ln line for bread | men at the soup kitchen

4.Who was affected by the Great Depression? Many were affected by the great depression. The economy in particular got hurt the most. As the US raised taxes on foreign goods it hurt the economies in other countries that were selling things in the US. As a result other countries raised taxes US imports.

 5. How did the Great Depression End? it is uncertain as to how much Roosevelt's New Deal programs helped to end the Great Depression. By all accounts, the New Deal programs eased the hardships of the Great Depression; however, the U.S. economy was still extremely bad by the end of the 1930s. But it was mostly the entrance of US into World War II that ended the Great Depression.
