FC: The Great Depression

What caused the Great Depression? Many things led up to the Great Depression, including money being unequally distributed, having debts from war, a drought, and a stock market crash.

Black Thursday On October 24th 1929, the stock market crashed sending everyone that had invested in it into a panic. The market went down 11% and as a result of this, many people decided to get out of it. Due to this, people lost their jobs, and the Great Depression started.

How long did the Great Depression last? The Great Depression lasted from 1930 until 1939. During this time, most people turned to farming as a source of income. It was an adequate source of income until the Dust Bowl during the 1930's.

The Dust Bowl Because everyone was turning to farming, this made the soil very dry and brittle. This made massive dust storms form causing farming nearly impossible. People now had no source of income, and getting fresh goods was rare.

What was life like during the Great Depression? Things were very difficult during the Great Depression. Everyone was losing their jobs, and the unemployment rate was skyrocketing. Because people no longer had jobs, businesses were closing because they had nobody to work for them, and goods were no longer being produced as much as they previously were. People in other countries were also suffering from this because they were no longer able to trade with the U.S. as easily.

Who was affected by the Great Depression? Basically everyone was affected by the Great Depression. The stock market dropped, affecting all of the businesses. Then, because the businesses could no longer afford to pay their employees, they had to let some go.

In result of getting let go from their jobs, people then turned to farming. Because people were farming so much, the goods being produced weren't worth as much. Also, due to the fact that there were not as many workers as there previously were, trading wasn't done as much, so foreign countries were also affected.

How did the Great Depression end? The Great Depression ended when World War II began. When World War II started, it created many jobs. Tons of men were able to join the army and fight in the war, while other men worked making the weapons those soldiers used.

Because of all of these jobs that were now possible because of World War II, the economy was able to pick itself back up and start repairing everything. Of course, everything didn't completely go back to normal. America still has some changes made because of the Great Depression, and it will always change the way some things work.
