FC: The Story of the Great Depression
The stock market crash in 1929 was how it all started. But it was not just that which caused it. Many other things played a role in it too. After the crash, there were bank failures .The banks lost money causing the people that had money in the banks to panic. But the banks, at least most of them, lost all of their money. There were also high tariffs and war debts. All of this left everyone in financial panic. | Top picture - the policeman watching the bank. bottom picture the night the stock market crashed 10/29/1929
Life during the great depression was not easy. Mostly everyone was out of work. People lost their house and had to live in shacks. There was poverty and widespread hunger. Many people got their meals by the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
More middle and lower class people and immigrant felt it most. Some barely felt the hardship at all. But for many, it was a hard time to get through. Many men left their families, discouraged that they couldn't find work to support them. Also many women went to work to help support the family.
The great depression started in 1930. Some people say it ended around 1939, but then some say it didn't officially end until 1941. So it lasted somewhere around 9-11 years.
The great depression ended from two things- the new deal made by F.D.R.,but more so from World War II. This was because demand went up for weapons and supplies for the war, which created more jobs.
