Located off historic Midland Road in Southern Pines, Longleaf Golf & Country Club has been called the "most playable course in the Sandhills" by Ron Witten of Golf Digest. Third generation golf course architect Dan Maples, creator of the Award Winning Pit Golf Links, brings his talent back home to Southern Pines with Longleaf Golf & Country Club. Built on the site of one of the Village of Pinehurst's former horse training estates, Longleaf shines with Dan's love of tradition. Many of the original features--the white fences, rail posts and hedgerows--have been carefully retained as a tribute to the original site. Longleaf Golf & Country Club / 10 N. 13: Club History In the early 1950's Lloyd Patrick (L.P.) Tate eloped with tobacco and textile heiress Ann Cannon Reynolds. The newly married couple purchased 547 acres of the James Barber Estate on which they built and operated a horse training center and reacetrack. L.P. called it Starland Farn, he liked to think of all his horses as stars. The entrance with it's stone pillars and a Starland Farm was located just behind the #2 tee box on Longleaf's golf course. A 1974 photograph of Starland Farm shows a one-mile long flat track, which had been built on the original steeplechase track, and the three-quarter mile turf race course with a show ring in the center. Today, some of the hedge and water jumps can still be seen on the #1 and #8 fairways. The #8 tee box also has a portion of the track fence intact which serves as a backdrop for the front nine holes. L.P. Tate enjoyed many thoroughbreds at Starland Farm. Up to thirty houses were stabled there during the winter season. The twenty-stall stucco horse barn and its blur roof was designed by R.E. (Rassie) Wicker, a Pinehurst cartograopher, local historian and self made "engineer". A local builder by the name of A.B. Sally constructed the horse barn. As demand for space increased, Tate expanded the stable west of the barn. Among the hourses trained at Starland Farm was the winner of the 1983 Preakness, Deputed Testimony. Jean Baptiste, one of Tate's favorite horses, won the 1955 Albany Stakes at Belmont Part and ran in the 1956 Kentucky Derby. The Longleaf Country Club opened on November 4, 1988 with the inaugural Golf Hall of Fame writers' tournament. THe Golf Hall of Fame opened the next day on November 5, 1988 in Pinehurst Village.
