FC: Uganda 2012 12 Child, Family and Community Studies (CFCS) students on a 10 week international practicum

1: Uganda: Pearl of Africa population: 30,000,000 (85% rural) average income about $1U.S. per day 50+ languages, Lugandan most common average life expectancy= <50 years HIV infection rate= 6.8% down significantly 64,000 AIDS deaths in 2009

2: The Uganda Project History of the Project Began in 2004 with the Community Social Service Worker program, a faculty in Child, Family and Community Studies Each year students were selected to go to Masaka, Uganda to complete a 10 week Practicum This year, the program is expanding and 12 students from four different faculties in CFCS will go to Kampala and Masaka Uganda. Participating faculties are: Community Social Service Worker Classroom and Community Support Early Childhood Education Therapeutic Recreation

4: Student practicum placements include: *Masaka Regional Referral Hospital *Kakunya School *Tekerra Resource Centre *Uganda Cares (AIDS) *Child Restoration Outreach *Anawesa community program

5: Masaka Regional Referral Hospital | Students work on the mental health ward, the maternity ward, and community services

6: The on site Daycare is supported by Douglas College | Children with parents using Uganda Cares and children from the hospital attend the day care

7: Traditional Healers and working with the social workers at the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital to provide care in the community and transition to the hospital when needed

8: Tekerra Resource Centre

9: Tekerra Resource Centre has a community school, a cooperative farming program and a women's craft program

11: The Canadian nurse at Tekerra Resource Centre has also started community outreach two days a week and goes to remote villages to provide care

12: Students assist in the outreach program and at the resource centre

14: Child Restoration Centre The goal of this organization is to remove children from a life on the street through rehabilitation and restore street children to their family villages. The centre has a nurse and a school and leisure programs to nurture the children

15: The centre is open during the day and at night children return to the streets and slums

16: Aneweza This community based program works with at-risk children and their families to help them develop talents and skills to be successful in daily life

17: The children participate in a variety of activities including traditional dance, physical activity, learning gardening, cooking and brick making skills

18: Kakunyu community school Mary has built this school for children of all abilities. She also has 30 disabled children in her home so that they have access to education
