BC: About the Artist When I was seven years old, my parents gave me a plastic box camera and one roll of black and white film to use on a family outing to the Los Angeles Zoo. With only twelve moments to capture, I thought I had better use them wisely and it was a sad thing to get to the end of the roll. However I still enjoyed the feeling of pressing the button and continued to snap away and could not leave the reptile house until I had snapped it for every single animal in the building. It took forever to get the images back from the store and it was very exciting to open the envelope and relive the adventure. Whenever I’m out and about, I don’t think much about the activity of shooting but rather the feeling of being wherever I am and capturing those moments, like the little boy at the zoo. I still can’t wait to get home and see the images I’ve captured and the feeling of reliving those moments. Using Photoshop has taught me much about light and color and using them to recreate the feeling of my subjects that make it magical for the viewer. Light, shadow and color have always fascinated and amazed me and the most important lesson I have learned is that a photographer doesn’t ‘take’ pictures but rather ‘makes’ them. In a world that very often doesn’t make much sense, we all feel a kind of emptiness deep within at one time or another. Photography literally puts it all into perspective and I’m trying to create images that help to fill that void. I began to travel to other more distant locations to further expand my horizons and have adapted the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi into my life and work. I have long been attracted to the Japanese ideal of simplicity and have endeavored to incorporate it as much as possible into art and life in general. While many of my images are certainly not Wabi-Sabi, it is the essence of Wabi-Sabi that fuels my passion to not focus on any particular genre. It is my work as a whole that portrays the freedom to make images that strike me as beautiful wherever I happen to be. Because much of my work is travel related, I’m often asked the question “where is your favorite place?” My answer to this is Earth. Earth is my favorite place. The richness of diversity that our planet has to offer is overwhelmingly fascinating and that is my focus; to spend my life cataloguing as much of it as I can and above all have fun with the experience. Over time, I have created an ever expanding collection of images that can be described as eclectic and whimsical while still being cultured and vibrant. | Robert Rosenblum www.wabisabiphotography.com wabisabi@earthlink.net
