S: Wings of Refuge Foundation
FC: The Wings of Refuge Foundation
Nurturing Africa's orphans physically, spiritually and mentally, Wings of Refuge is providing hope for today and equipping for tomorrow.
Wings of Refuge was founded in March 2009 by childhood friends Ashley Gray and Briana Larson, after a mission trip to Tanzania left them wanting to do more.
The Wings of Refuge Foundation aims to properly care for the orphans of East Africa by providing better housing, proper nutrition, as well as medical and dental care. In addition to the physical well-being of the children, we feel that the biggest piece to the puzzle is education. We can feed and clothe orphans all day long, but are we really making an impact? We ensure our children get a good primary school education and tutor them in hopes that they will be able to test into secondary school. For those orphans who pass the secondary school exams, we will sponsor that education. Some children will not pass these rigorous exams, and in those cases, we will provide vocational training. This gives all of our children hope for adulthood. In short, instead of handing out fish, we are creating fishermen.
Lawate is a small, rural village in the valley between Mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro. The average household income in this area is less than $200 USD/year. The people here are ravaged by AIDS, malaria and and the various side effects of malnutrition.
 Lawate, Tanzania
Lawate School Project | The primary school in Lawate is completely dilapidated. There are holes in the walls the size of basketballs, and it is literally crumbling around them. Not to mention the thick, black mold clinging to the rafters and window frames. | Our goal is to rehabilitate the three existing school buidlings, as well as finish constructing a brand-new building for them which will add two classrooms and an office.
Lawate Orphanage Project | Though Lawate is a very small, and rural, village, they are overrun with orphans. This is due mainly to the high death rate in the area from malaria, AIDS, malnutrition and the side effects of famine. There is currently no housing or care for the orphans. Wings of Refuge has secured a building site for an orphanage, and we plan to break ground in the near future.
Lawate Farm Project | Wings of Refuge believes strongly in sustainability, in two ways: sustainability for our institutions and for the orphans themselves. Our farm has crops, vegetables, fruit as well as goats and chickens. The farm will employ young men and women who were not able to attend secondary school. This will not only give them a job, but vocational training they otherwise would not receive. The income generated from the sale of the produce will go directly to the Lawate Orphanage and School Projects.
Change 4 Hope | Change 4 Hope is an initiative of Wings of Refuge, started by Tom Wichterman. The goal of C4H is to collect people's unwanted change in collection boxes and also online. 100% of the money collected will go straight into the Wings of Refuge Orphanage Project fund. www.givechange4hope.org
The Foundation of Forty is a partnership of 40 donors who are giving $1,000 to the construction of this facility. We are not only laying the foundation for a reformation in total health and wellness for African orphans, but the foundation for a generational and sustainable impact in rural East Africa. | The Foundation of Forty
We like to think of this program as pretty common sense: simple and beneficial in so many ways. We aim to collect used hospital equipment that is currently piling up in facility basements, hallways and storage areas, which will eventually end up in a landfill. After collection, we will ship them to East Africa where they can make a world of difference in rural hospitals and clinics which have little to no equipment. This way, we are not only recycling and repurposing these machines, but the impact on the standard of healthcare in this area of the world will be exponential.
You can donate. It will cost us about $40,000 USD to get the Lawate orphanage up and running. It will cost approximately $20,000 USD to rehabilitate the Lawate primary school and finish construction on the new building. The Lawate farm project will cost about $10-15,000 USD to start. However, the impact of these projects will be felt for generations in this community as we give them invaluable life skills and a way to sustain themselves. You can donate online, via PayPal, on our website: www.wingsofrefugefoundation.org, or there are instructions to sending a check. | Here's How You Can Get Involved: We are always looking for marketing and fundraising opportunities. We also have numerous volunteer opportunities for one-time events, or for those who want to get more involved with Wings of Refuge, we have several volunteer committees, such as: Fundraising/Marketing, Trip/Volunteer Coordination, Legal, and Building/Field Projects.
