3: “ I reject your reality and substitute my own” -Mythbusters Good or bad, I've loved this quote since I heard it. It expresses my woodworking from the start. I am a self taught woodturner. I certainly use several books as reference but have never taken a class. I guess that is the way I've lived most of my life. I have been a furniture maker for over 20 years, also self taught. I love working with wood. I was a pottery major in college but after school did not get back into it. In Tennessee, a large Oak tree fell on my garage. I had it cut into planks and started making furniture. When I moved to Southern Colorado I stared turning wood exclusively. I don't have room to do anything else. The wood I use usually comes from trees cut down in the Pueblo area, which means it is rarely perfect, frequently presenting cracks, holes and other challenges. I love the nature of wood and rather than eliminate the imperfections, I incorporate them into the finished pieces. I use crushed minerals such as Turquoise, Malachite and Lapis to fill cracks and voids and frequently incorporate natural rims. My work reflects the spirit of where is live, the southwest. A little rebellious and independent with great beauty, sometimes hard to find.
