BC: As the great historian, Plutarch, said, "He [Archimedes] placed his whole affection and ambition in those purer speculations where there can be no reference to the vulgar needs of life." In his pursuit to understand the world he put his affection and ambition before even some of the simple needs of life. This shows how dedicated he was in his search of the truth. The truth about the world and how it works must have an important value to Archimedes based on the beliefs, achievements, and inventions he had and made in his pursuit to get a better understanding of the world. The perceptions of truth have continually changed throughout time based on theories and beliefs made by experts in a particular field. Based on what has been proven in a particular field such as philosophy, logic, mathematics, science, etc. during different periods of time can change the popular belief of truth about that subject. Contrarily, if a belief about something is and has always been true, without being subject to change, then the perception of truth may stay the same about that particular subject. All his innovations had consequences that were both positive and negative. The positive consequences of his work were that they revolutionized many fields and he made many advancements to everyday objects that we use today. There are no possible negative consequences as his work greatly enhanced and improved the already ancient innovations that were in existence as well as creating new inventions.

1: Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer who was born in 287 BCE. In his risky pursuit for the truth and comprehension of the world and how it works, he made many advancements in the aforementioned fields of mathematics, physics, engineering, and astronomy. Many of the objects and ideas that he invented/discovered in his venture are some that we use in our everyday lives today.
2: He invented a method for determining the volume of an object with an irregular shape. It is said that he was so excited with his own discovery which is the origin of the word "Eureka!" in his bathtub. This idea became the Archimedes principle which states that a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. This everyday principle revolutionized hydrostatics.
3: A lot of the engineering advancements he made in his pursuit were for the needs of his hometown Syracuse, Sicily. Archimedes was commissioned by his king to design a massive ship. Due to its enormous size, the ship would leak a considerable amount of water through its hull, so the Archimedes Screw was created in order to remove bilge water. It had revolving screw-shaped blades inside a cylinder.
4: In his pursuit, Archimedes also designed weapons of war to defend his hometown of Syracuse. The weapon he invented was known as the Claw of Archimedes which was a defense mechanism consisting of a crane-like arm from which a large metal grappling hook was suspended. This arm could lift opponent ships out of the water and possibly sink them.
5: Another weapon of war created by Archimedes was The Archimedes Heat Ray. This weapon used previously positioned mirrors to focus sunlight on approaching enemy ships which would cause them to catch on fire. This was a key factor in winning naval battles from the seashore itself.
6: Though Archimedes did not invent the simple machine, the lever, he gave a thorough explanation of how it worked. He also improved the power and accuracy of the catapult and invented the odometer, which measured distance.
7: Some of Archimedes's greatest achievements were in the field of mathematics. His most greatest achievement in this field was the approximation of the value of pi by using a technique known as the method of exhaustion. Some other achievements were the deduction that the area of a circle was pi times the radius of that circle squared.
