S: A Tale of Unadopted Adaptations

FC: A Tale of Unadopted Adaptations | By: Martina Padron and Colton Marcinell

Hello, boys and girls, today, the subject is "adaptations", after this story you will answer some questions about them.

Once, there was an ant named George, who lived in his little village abundant with ants with various little cottages made of leaves and rocks. Like any other day he headed off to his school, which was comprised of mostly ants. George was excited, this was because, they would be learning of adaptations, today.

George pondered what an adaptation was, he knew adapting was and that was getting used to something. So adaptations must be things must be things used to adapt he figured. George arrived at school, and shortly after class began. It seems that his guess about adaptations was correct.

The teacher explained what adaptations were, they were traits or actions that helped an organism, adapt or survive. But as the class was left to do an assignment, some of the other ants made fun of him, it was a new year and George hardly knew anyone. He was made fun of due to how he was red and everyone else was brown.

It was strange to him how his classmates, who hadn't even bothered or spoke to him before now were making fun of him. But this continued for several days after the lesson that he had been so happy about and interested in. This made him both increasingly upset and annoyed. He hated his redness.

So George spoke to his teacher, who told him, "Don't worry about it, you may find people that can appreciate such a trait." All George could do was attempt to move on, and he did, only to find a greater problem...

There was a giant spider who had started to attack his village! What was he supposed to do!? The creature wandered destroying almost everything in sight, but didn't seem to notice George, strangely enough. "This is like an adaptation!", George realized.

He realized that he blinded in with the red stump of wood that he stood by, and came up with a plan to save the village. He managed to find a ditch nearby and covered it so that the spider would not notice one bit and get stuck in his trap. Then, George went out of his camouflage.

When George went out of camouflage, he made sure that he could be seen by the spider and ended up directing him right into the ditch, never again would the spider cause destruction. Ever since that day, because of his adaptation of camouflage, George has been regarded as the village hero, and he never was picked on again.
