1: Book Summary | With a background in Texas, The Coates family live in a small town named the Salt Licks. The characters are Travis, Arliss, Mama and Papa. In the beginning, Papa goes on a cattle drive to make cash money. While the family meets Old Yeller, Burn Sanderson (the owner of Old Yeller) comes to claim Old Yeller. With a scared Arliss, the family makes an exchange with Burn Sanderson. They trade a huge feast for Old Yeller. This dog becomes a friend to little Arliss and Travis. While Travis becomes the man of the house until Papa returns, he does all the work. He cuts wood, goes hunting, and a lot more. Old yeller comes with Travis to help him do chores. Without Old Yeller, the Coates family could have been in grave danger. The dog risks his life several times, and seriously injured himself. But the trained dog is only trying to protect its owners. When Travis and Old Yeller get hurt, Lisbeth gave them a new pup to make them feel better. But Travis doesn't want it. He says Arliss can play with it. At the end of the story, a mad wolf attacks Mama and Lisbeth when they are trying to burn Spot(a baby cow) because he got rabies. They run away as fast as they can. Old Yeller fights it off but not for long. Travis is watching the mad wolf attack Old Yeller. Travis runs inside to get his gun. He shoots the wolf mad wolf. The wolf is dead, but Old Yeller has been bit by an infected wolf. This mad wolf was caring rabies. Mama says that they must kill Old Yeller because they don't want it to hurt them. Travis shoots Old Yeller in the head. Mama tries to tell Travis that it was the right thing to do. Travis is sad for a long time. Papa returns home from the cattle drive and tells Travis that you have to let the bad things slip away. He makes him feel a little bit better but he is still sad. Papa also brings home a new horse for Travis. Travis rides his horse to the drinking water and saw the new puppy and Arliss swimming in the water. Normally he would have yelled at them but he laugh at them. Travis is happy for the first time because it is a new beginning. He is also happy because the puppy is part Old Yeller
2: This book is a real special one. With a hardworking boy and a protective dog, it makes a perfect bond. Perhaps it is the combination of superb writing and the sensitivity to human emotions.
