S: Walnut - Your Birthday Surprise

BC: Happy Birthday Mario

FC: Happy Birthday with Love!

1: Last year, just after your birthday, Josh asked you if you would, "let Mommy buy you a bird for your birthday?" You answered a very decided, "Yes!" That began my year-long plan to find the "perfect" bird! About 10 years ago, you visited a little avian shop and spent a great deal of time with a small parrot. Until recently, you were unable to remember what that bird was called and I tried to find the name of the store, researched various small to medium-sized parrots, and ask around but, ultimately, your memory saved the day. You remembered that the small, intelligent, talking parrot was a Quaker Parrot. I had already found the perfect place to find a hand-fed, well cared for bird - DJ Feathers Aviary, located near Emma's gymnastics - and I knew that would be a great place to find the bird you've always wanted. In late February, I went online to see their pricing and availability. I was surprised and disappointed to see that every available Quaker already had a deposit. I was even more surprised to learn that babies had a weaning period of 10 weeks. A few days later I went into the aviary to ask the owner when she expected to have more Quakers. To my excitement, she had two babies that had not been added to the website. They were only a few weeks old and I would have my pick as to which one I wanted. Without hesitation, I placed a deposit to hold your future friend. I knew you would have to get your present early but another clutch wasn't expected until early summer and that would be too late. Joshua and I spent the next few weeks getting to know both parrots but decided that "701", nicknamed "Walnut" by Joshua, was the one we wanted. Walnut was calmer and "quaked" less than 702 and had an adorable crooked smile! Additionally, Walnut was born on February 14th, 2010; Valentine's Day! I hope you love Walnut as much as we do. Happy Birthday!

2: Josh nicknamed the birds; 701 was "Walnut" and 702 was "Hazelnut" Walnut was very quiet but alert and super sweet! | Hazelnut was so silly, quaking for more food even after he/she had already been fed. Without DNA testing, we wouldn't know if they were boys or girls or one of each!

5: It was very exciting to see little feathers coming in at the tips of their wings but the cutest development this week was definitely their tail feathers!

6: We made our choice this week and started visiting with only Walnut. We noticed the most remarkable changes and growth! Walnut was very interactive and had grown so much!! We loved watching Walnut stretch out that long neck!

8: Look Who's Perching! It was so great to work on "stepping up" with Walnut. We also worked with "kisses". Walnut is such a sweetie. We couldn't believe how many feathers had come in after just one week!

10: At 6 weeks, Walnut was getting very active! We had been waiting to find out if Walnut was a Boy or Girl and on March 30, 2010, thanks to DNA testing, we learned... | IT'S A BOY!! | Walnut also had his first feather trim and boy, did he need it! He kept trying to fly around! He had almost all his feathers but down still remained under his wings. We were quite impressed at how far he'd come in such a short time.

12: What a Pretty Bird! We just LOVE coming to see Walnut! We told Julia our little secret but hopefully, he will stay one for a little while longer | This week, Walnut had rubbed off a few feathers on his head on a toy in his cage - what a silly bird! I just can't wait for you to meet him!

15: You could really see how affectionate Walnut was becoming at just 7 weeks old

16: It's hard to believe how quickly Walnut grew up! I'm sure he'll grow even more before you get to see him but I've tried to capture the moments you missed and I'm sure you'll have many more moments of your own in the future!

19: Walnut is a wonderful little creature and I'm learning why you are so fond of birds as I grow to love him! I can't wait for you to finally meet Walnut and give him his new name, a new home, and best of all, a place in your heart! Happy Birthday!
