S: Ryan Showalter Celebrating 7 Years with EMM 2005 to 2012

BC: 1998 - YES Wales 2001 - STAT Queens, NY 2004 - YES Connecticut 2005 - 2012 - Salunga, PA

FC: Ryan & Jen Showalter

Jen, I love the way you interact easily with people and engage with Ryan in ministry. And the way you cling to God's promises has been a blessing in my life. You are one of the most courageous women I know as I see you continuing to live fully instead of letting life overcome you. | Ryan, thank you for at least attempting to understand an introvert. : ) I appreciate your willingness to give me responsibility within EMM and to draw me out. You have been a blessing in my life and at HDC so many times as you engaged and brought, shall we say... entertainment. : ) | Ryan and Jen, As I reflect on what I've known of you, I love how this picture captures your heart and dreams, for the nations and for yourselves. Thank you for your transparency in your journey, which has been a source of inspiration as I see your faith and devotion to God and each other. | Can I just say I'm so excited for your journey into this next season of life?! You'll fit into West Coast culture so well, and I'm praying it's a season of new blessings, friendships and healing. Thanks for sharing yourselves! | Jan

All of us in Indonesia send our blessings as you enter the next step in the journey. Thank you for all that you invested in those of us with YES Indonesia! May the Lord go before you and give you great peace and wisdom as you walk with Him. And don't forget to sing, dance, laugh, and 'make melody in your heart to the King of Kings! Angie

RYAN | Thanks for your leadership, friendship, encouragement, and prayers for each of us. May God bless you as you continue to walk in His plan. Hugs and blessings from, Team In-do-ne-sia 2012-2013 Andrew W., Maria N., Grantley S., Lia K. | R espected Y oungish A live N oble | "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." 1 Peter 3:15

Ryan, Even though it was a relatively short amount of time, its been a great blessing to work with you over the last year and a half. I can remember the first time I came into your office to meet you and saw your knife from Nepal and the "make coffee, not war" bumper sticker (or at least that's what I think it said) and I thought "This guy is gonna be awesome!" I've always loved working on different projects and events with you. Stay classy my good man, you will be greatly missed. Andy

May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You. — Psalm 33:22 | Ryan, It was a great honor to serve alongside you these past years. I will always remember you as one with great passion for loving God and people. I pray that God will continue to guide and bless you in your studies, future ministry and ongoing service. - Joe Hollinger | Ryan, Blessings to you as you leave EMM and journey into this next chapter of your life. Your passion for God and for life will be missed! I feel blessed to have met you and Jen! Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Love, Tammy | Ryan, You've invested so much of yourself into youth and their development, and given some significant years of your life here at EMM. Your story is an inspiration to me. May God make his face to shine upon you in your new ventures. - Joanne | Dear Ryan: It's been a privilege getting to know you. Your enthusiasm and passion for the Lord, your work, and your wife have always been evident and inspiring! You will be missed and thought of often! I am reminded of you when I read this quote from Francis Chan: "But God doesn't call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn't come through." Many, many blessings to you and Jen. Linda Moffett

He will not let your foot slip-- he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you-- the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm-- he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. | Ryan and Jen, May you sense God's deep and abiding love with you in this season of transition. I am blessed by the way each of you have set your eyes on Jesus and the manner in which you live your faith out in the daily things of life. You will be deeply missed here at EMM! With care, Maria

In the name of Jesus Christ, I bless you with the promises of God, which are “yes” and “amen.” May the Holy Spirit make you healthy and strong in body, mind, and spirit to move in faith and expectancy. May God’s angels be with you to protect and keep you. Be blessed with supernatural strength to turn your eyes from foolish, worthless, and evil things, and to shut out the demeaning and the negative. Instead may you behold the beauty of things that God has planned for you as you obey his Word. May God bless your ears to hear the lovely, the uplifting, and the encouraging. May your mind be strong, disciplined, balanced, and faith-filled. May your feet walk in holiness and your steps be ordered by the Lord. May your hands be tender and helping, blessing those in need. May your heart be humble and receptive to one another and to the things of God, not to the world. God’s grace be upon your home, that it may be a sanctuary of rest and renewal, a haven of peace where sounds of joy and laughter grace its walls, where love and unconditional acceptance of one another is the constant rule. May God give you the spiritual strength to overcome the evil one and avoid temptation. May God’s grace be upon you to fulfill your dreams and visions. May goodness and mercy follow you all the days of your long life. By Michael W. Smith | Ryan, Thank you for being peers with us in ministry through EMM. We have enjoyed working with you during your time at EMM as the leader of the short-term programs. Thank you even more for the legacy you are leaving behind of character. You and Jen have experienced so much over these past years of disappointment, loss, and living with unknowns and lack of answers. You have modeled being a caring loving husband through the ups and downs of life. The way you demonstrate love for Jen is beautiful to observe. You truly have emulated the truth of loving your wife as Christ does the church. I will also always remember seeing the two of you with your arms around each other with your free arms raised in worship to God together. Blessings as you take steps of faith to a new venture. May God direct each step of the journey! Darrel and Sherill

Ryan, wishing you the best as you begin a new adventure! I remember many of these photos -- and I love the joy, laughter, and willingness to not take yourself too seriously. I also remember the things you do take seriously -- including care for your wife and for many others along the way, and a sincere faith. May you continue to wrestle with the mysteries of grace and love, and may you continue to laugh deeply and often. - Stephanie Hanna | Ryan, It has been a privilege learning from you and working with you. Your passion for God and discipleship is inspiring. The way you and Jen live out your lives has been a blessing to me. I know that God will continue to use you both in His ministry. I will miss seeing you both in Lancaster, but I'm looking forward to hearing about your new adventures in California. Grace and peace to you and Jen! - Emily Gingrich | Ryan, it has been a privilege to serve with you. May God bless you and Jen as you head to California. You'll be missed by many people here, but we eagerly anticipate God's blessing on this next chapter in your lives. Peace, Dan

Ryan, When I think of you, I think of one of my heroes -- a man named Robertson McQuilkin, former missionary to Japan and president of Columbia Bible College. But he's not my hero because of his accomplishments. | He's my hero because of how he loved his wife. When his wife Muriel developed Alzheimer's and wasn't peaceful with other caregivers, Robertson resigned and became a stay-at-home husband who took care of her for 19 years until her death. At the urging of friends, he wrote a book called A Promise Kept that tells the whole story. You're a man who's kept his promises. I honor you for your faithfulness in loving Jen, especially when it has cost you. You glorify God through your character and choices. With deep respect, Nita

Sherrie | Dear Ryan and Jen, The times that I have been with you over the past 7 years have been a blessing! Ryan, I have seen deep growth and maturity in you and I have come to trust your integrity and passion for truth. The road has often been difficult to travel and therein lies the maturity and depth of faith that I see in you. Jen, I never would have dreamed that the little girl I knew at Petra would one day be a grown woman friend! J I know your journey has been filled with joy as well as trouble but always remember, God never wastes a journey! Both of you are deeply loved and will be missed around here! 30: Just so you don't forget me and my "out of the box" ways...

I loved being able to say I was here longer than you... | Some Thoughts: | I was inspired and encouraged by your steadfast faith in God through the hard times you and Jen have gone through in the past few years. | I'm not opinionated, I'm just always right...haha :) | Pink is still not a man color... | I know God will continue to use you and Jen to bless others and further His Kingdom. Thanks for challenging me in my beliefs and blessing my life. I will miss you! ~ Good, Trisha

*Blessed to know you and work with you. *Blessed by your --fun-loving spirit --hard-working, - forward-thinking, and - vision filled personality May the Lord bless you and keep you as you go from us. May your steps be sure and steadfast. May you and Jen both experience experience the gracious hand of Jesus' healing power! Grace and Peace every day, Beth Gibbs | RYAN, AND JEN

Ryan and Jen, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started working at EMM last May, but I have truly been blessed by the time that I've gotten to know both of you. Ryan, you've challenged and encouraged me to grow in my gifts and have allowed me to share my many strong opinions :) You've both stood with me through some big milestones in my life, and we've also had MANY moments of laughter together :) Thank you! You will be missed more than I can express in this short note! ~Jacki

Dear Ryan, As you now know, a number of us were given the opportunity to write something up as a going-away present for you. Of course, I wanted to write something but the problem is what to write that I haven't already told you when I was leaving. Plus, I’m not the flowery one!! Ha. I’m not sure where to start, but here we go... Ryan, there are so many things that I appreciate about you. Just to name a few (and in no particular order): I appreciate your heart for missions. | I appreciate the way that you trusted me and showed it. If you were gone, you had confidence in me to take care of things in your absence. I appreciate the way that you were willing to listen to others in order to grow; in leadership, in understanding and in life. I appreciate the way that you could be serious one minute and completely “off your head” the next. I appreciate the hunger you have for God and His word.

I appreciate the way that you really tried to work for change. I appreciate the way that you really invest in people. I appreciate the way that you took time to listen to the introverts around you. I appreciate the way that you encourage people through words or small acts of kindness (I could really use one of those Three Musketeers right now! Ha!!). I appreciate the ways you were vulnerable with me and the rest of your staff (in varying levels). I appreciate the way you taught me more about myself and my gifts. I appreciate the many conversations we've had. You were (and are) more than a supervisor for me. You truly became a brother and good friend. Even though you're not really sentimental, and this probably doesn't mean much to you, I really do miss our conversations. I miss the days we'd be having a supervisory and find ourselves going over the scheduled one hour, simply because we were sharing about life. Thanks for caring about more than my tasks. | I appreciate the way that you weren't afraid to challenge me because you knew that I could do more than I thought. I appreciate that you weren't afraid of tackling the hard issues. I appreciate the way you could help me name things that I was feeling and wasn't always able to express. I appreciate the care and concern you have for others, especially for Jen. The way you have shared in her burden is a testament of what a strong marriage can be. And, I’m sure there's more I could say, but I should stop before you start rolling your eyes. As you embark on this next step of the journey, know that I am so excited for you! It's so awesome to see one of your dreams realized! May God provide all that you and Jen need friends, church, doctors, finances, energy to study, and more. May He overwhelm you with His goodness. It was a privilege to work with you for so many years, but more so, it's a joy and privilege to be your friend. Praying many blessings upon you, my friend. Stacy

What a joy it's been to walk and work with you over the last 8 years! It has been fun seeing you “grow up!” From the days at HDC as a YES participant, to being on HDC staff, seeing you develop your leadership skills as the Director of Discipleship Ministries and now in this last year as the Discipleship Coach! It has been a special joy of mine to work alongside of you as a fellow coach. And it has been a special blessing and encouragement to see you and Jen walk together in the dark and difficult path of her health. What an inspiration you are! Thanks for your faithfulness! We're going to miss you! But we know that God has more for you. You're not done “growing up!” Now, I also just wanted to say that if anything on this page offends you, I have some gentle words of counsel for you: “GET OVER IT!” Amos & Rowena Stoltzfus

 A tribute to Ryan's hair...

Dear Mr. Ryan Matthew Showalter... Well, I just couldn't resist. How could I even begin to pay you tribute without first tributing your hair? There have been many "emmendous" hair stages and moments that I have personally witnessed, and many I have missed. I'm sure to miss a few more due to your California move, but trust our paths will cross again...and I'm sure they will...as you know the EMM cult will call us both back again. :) (Just to note: I couldn't find your really long-haired hair-do pics) But seriously, it has been a privilege to be your YES teammate; your HDC Training Assistant while your Connecticut team re-entered; and working together again a few years back at EMM when you were my boss of all things. :) Not to mention running into each other at various places and EMM events in between. I still remember you saying at the end of our YES experience that our team would probably never hear from you again, as you weren't the best at | keeping in touch. I mean was I to be a friend or just an acquaintance in your life? :) So it was a pleasant surprise that we've had various connection points, and hope there are a few more in the future as well. Ryan, for as much as I've picked on you and put you in "time-outs" when called for :)...I do greatly respect you. You have a heart that loves and lives for Jesus, and I find you and Jen... as people.... and your marriage and witness...very inspiring. I've learned much from you, and appreciate all the wisdom and ways you have invested in my life. I'm excited for what God has up his sleeves for you guys, and affirm you on this next stage of the journey. Chad and I will definitely be keeping you guys in our prayers, and will cont. to be praying for healing for Jen... and a little one for you too. Keep in touch..love you guys. Greta Short

Ryan, Its been great getting to know you, from the man fresh out of high school that I met in 1998 to the strong, confident, caring leader that you've become. I praise God for your life and how He's worked in and through you. Thanks for believing in me to help start the new YES in Indonesia and for taking me under your wing as I worked with GO! this year. I look forward to hearing what the Lord does as He leads you on. As I write this the word on my heart is "Deliverer" - the Lord is Your strong deliverer to rescue you from every evil and be Your refuge. May you and Jen find your rest and deliverance in Him as He leads you on! Blessings Troy | Ryan, It has been quite the journey from your first day of work at EMM when Loren was hired and our trip to Ohio where we had a chance to really begin to get to know each other. I'll never forget those sometimes deep, sometimes far-ranging conversations during our van trips back from Discipleship Ministries staff meetings at HDC. You have grown tremendously during these years of serving with EMM. Thanks for your caring supervision, and your friendship! 41: Ryan, I have seen you grow in the gifts God has given you before my eyes! You are compassionate, visionary, collaborative, fun, and a jeans man!! I know many have been touched , changed and grown because of your touch in their lives. You example as a husband and a friend for Jen is an reflection of Jesus in your life. It has been such a blessing working together as a mission team albeit for a short time. I know what God is leading you into the future will be challenging, rewarding, and fulfilling. I know as you continue to travel the world with God's call in mission many more will be the richer! Rose and I identify with you and Jen's journey as you go to California and grad school. Enjoy the sun, the surf, the mountains, and all of southern California. I am the richer for joining in your journey during this leg! Blessings, Steve P.S. I would like to talk to the two of you about a mission assignment!! | Ryan, It has been a joy to know and work with you for the past 13 months. I have appreciated your good grasp of complex issues and concepts. Your ability to grasp issues enables you in my view to develop relevant strategies and analyze the strategies very carefully and develop proposals to address what needs to be addressed. I have enjoyed and appreciated very much your contribution on the management team particularly your keen and big picture stuff and have appreciated your influencing capacity as a leader. I have watched in amazement your deep values and core convictions challenged by unforeseen realities but with the help of the Lord and your deep faith in him you continue to demonstrate your unwavering faith and commitment to Christian discipleship. As you go to Fuller, I remain waiting with great expectation for how God will continue to use the two of you for his kingdom impact. Thank you for living faithfully as Disciples of Christ. I pray that the Lord will guide your feet and your heart as you continue to run this race of faith as disciples of Jesus. With gratitude, Nelson
