BC: Thanks for reading my notebook!

FC: Home Sweet Home | By: Brittany Zambito

Hi, that's me Sue! | That is my daddy and mommy!

My mommy has no job, and my daddy works at a factory.

One evening my daddy came home and told us he got fired from his job. 5 months later we got kicked out of our house and now we are homeless.

After we got kicked out of our house we went to an emergency shelter until we can find someplace to live.

While I was at the shelter I met one of the workers. The worker was Mrs. Jelly. Mrs. Jelly told me that the main reason families are becoming homeless are due to fires, hazardous living conditions, and personal issues (1). | Caruso, Laura M., and Ralph da Costa Nunez. "Are shelters the answer to family homelessness? (Life in America)." USA Today [Magazine] Jan. 2003: 46+. Infotrac Newsstand. Web.23 Mar. 2012.

Mrs. Jelly then told me how over 600,000 families are homeless in the U.S (1). | Caruso, Laura M., and Ralph da Costa Nunez. "Are shelters the answer to family homelessness? (Life in America)." USA Today [Magazine] Jan. 2003: 46+. Infotrac Newsstand. Web. 23 Mar. 2012.

A couple months passed since my family got kicked out of our house and we still had no place to live.

The emergency shelter told us we had to leave due to other families needing the shelter which made me nervous.

My family moved out onto the streets of the city. Over 3,000 cities contribute to the amount of people who are homeless in the U.S (2). | "Abt Associates' Annual Study Finds Homelessness on the Decline." India Banking News 14 Dec. 2011. InfotracNewsstand. Web. 23 Mar. 2012.

As I continued my journey on the streets with my family, I noticed I saw mostly single men and women. Some were veterans, and others were people who got abused, and some were homeless due to poverty (3). | "About Homelessness." National Alliance to End Homelessness:. Web. 22 Mar. 2012.

After a couple nights on the streets I met a little old woman who has been homeless for weeks now, her name was Bertha.

Bertha is very sick and has an addiction issue, and has diabetes, she needed help but could not afford it (3). | "About Homelessness." National Alliance to End Homelessness:. Web. 22 Mar. 2012.

Bertha was a grandmother to several of children, but they all got put in a foster home so they could get the treatment they needed. | "About Homelessness." National Alliance to End Homelessness:. Web. 22 Mar. 2012.

Later on that day I went into a soup kitchen with my parents to get some dinner. People have donated food for people in need like my family, and Bertha (4). | "Department of Human Services: Links to Organizations That Help the Homeless." Object Moved. Web. 05 Apr. 2012. .

Organizations donate food to these soup kitchens. What the organizations donations are from people around the community.

I met a nice man at the soup kitchen, his name was Mr. Peanut, he was telling me how people send money monthly or they just donate food they don't need to help people in need. He also said how all the organizations put together in the U.S. raise $85 million dollars each year to help the homeless (4). | "Department of Human Services: Links to Organizations That Help the Homeless." Object Moved. Web. 05 Apr. 2012. .

Mr. Peanut also showed my family different stores and places that donate to the homeless. Some stuff they donate are toys, and clothes (4) . | "Department of Human Services: Links to Organizations That Help the Homeless." Object Moved. Web. 05 Apr. 2012. .

A couple of days passed and we were in a homeless shelter. The shelter provided us everything we needed to survive homeless.

My daddy looked over at the wall at the shelter and saw a paper that said, "Homelessness Support" (5). | "Homelessness and Tenancy Support." On Track. Web. 04 Apr. 2012.

My daddy looked into it and found an organization that would help him get back on track with finding a supporting job so our family could get to the way life use to be.

Weeks later my daddy got hired to work in a new factory, from getting help from the "Homelessness Support" program.

The "Homelessness Support" program told my dad that programs like them get donated over $1.83 million to help people like him (6). | $$$ | "Homeless Assistance/U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)." 301 Moved Permanently. Web. 05 Apr. 2012. .

A few weeks after my daddy started his job, my family was able to afford a small apartment. Finally I could just relax in my own house and think about what happened to my family over the past months.

This journey made me realize that even though we got kicked out of my house, to going to an emergency shelter, to going on the streets, and finally going into a homeless shelter, my daddy got a job and we are back into a home to call home sweet home.

After being homeless I try to find ways to help the homeless in anyway.

Some things I do and you can do to is become friends with the homeless like how Bertha and I became friends.

Another thing we can do is donate items like soup, and snacks to organizations who help the homeless.

One other thing we can do is donate clothes we have grown out of, and toys we don't play with anymore to stores that except them.

Everyone can give a helping hand to someone in need, give it a shot!
