The Ordinary World | Hiccup is a small boy that lives amongst a village of vikings. He doesn't feel like he exactly fits in after his mother dies when he is younger, and now his dad is very protective and urging him to be a great viking. Hiccup is often teased by the other viking children because he is small ad clumsy, and really is not interested in the ways of being a viking.

Call to Adventure Hiccup is trying to prove that he can be a great viking, but he is getting highly frustrated with himself and his inability to be able fit and coordinated. He decides to take a walk alone in the jungle to collect his thoughts and sort out his feelings, when he captures a very dangerous NightFurry Dragon with a homemade device.

Refusal of the call Once Hiccup captures Toothless(the Night Fury) he is hesitant about what he should do. He wants to let the dragon go and forget that the whole incident ever happened. But Hiccup is also afraid that if he lets the dragon go he will be angry and will try to kill Hiccup or follow him home to hurt his family or sabotage his friends in the village.

Meeting with the mentor Toothless ends up being Hiccups mentor because he is very protective of Hiccup and is trying to help him achieve his dreams in becoming a great viking. He helps him deal with the children at Viking school and his training to be a good leader and defender

Crossing the First Threshold | Hiccup begins to realize that dragons are not horrible creatures, and that they are actually calm and very loving. Hiccup begins to train toothless, and starts to understand how great of a friend he is to have.

In attempt to help his son become a better viking, Stoick allows Hiccup to join dragon training. But Hiccup is hesitant about it, because he has just started befriending Toothless. | While he's in dragon training, Gobber is the only person that really tries to support Hiccup. Every day he goes to visit Toothless after dragon training. | The other kids in dragon training treat him like a weakling and make fun of him a lot. He tries to fit in and act tough but the other kids just don't fall for it. | Tests, Allies, & Enemies

Astrid begins to suspect Hiccup of secret training, so she follows him when he goes to visit Toothless. He tries to convince her that dragons are good creatures, but she doesn't believe him. So he takes her on a dragon ride on Toothless. While they're on their romantic flight, Toothless leads them to the dragon's nest, where they see the mother of all dragons. | Approach to the Inmost Cave

Ordeal | The elder of the village chooses Hiccup over the others in dragon training to slay a dragon in front of the village. But instead of slaying the dragon, he tries to convince the villagers that the dragons are nice. But Stoick won't have it. He intrudes and the dragon is spooked, causing the creature to attack. Toothless comes flying to the rescue, but he ends up getting captured. The vikings intend on using Toothless to find the dragon's nest. They sail across the sea with him and Hiccup and his friends are left trying to figure out what to do.

Hiccup talks with Astrid, and they come up with a plan to save Toothless and the rest of the vikings from the vicious dragon that awaits them at the nest. Hiccup is finally recognized as the strong spirit he is and the rest of the kids in dragon training appreciate his strength as a viking. | Reward

The Road Back | Hiccup gathers the others from dragon training and teaches them how to tame and ride a dragon. They're all hesitant at first, calling him "crazy." But they eventually get the hang of it and head towards the nest to end the journey.

Resurrection Hiccup and his friends make it to the nest in time to help. His friends distract the giant monster as he attacks it. Eventually, it's a one on one between the mother dragon and Hiccup. The rest of the vikings are convinced that he is dead after the battle, and Stoick is devastated. But Toothless reveals Hiccup's weary form under his wings. They won, but Hiccup has lost a leg in the process.

Return with the Elixir | Hiccup returns home with a new mechanical leg and his best friend by his side. As he goes outside, he sees dragons everywhere. The vikings have seen the kind nature of the dragons and are now keeping them as pets and allies. The whole village sees him as a hero.
