FC: Katharina von Bora By Sarah Towner

Katharina von Bora was born on January 29, 1499 in Lippendorf, Germany to Hans von Bora and Katharina Haubitz. She had 3 brothers and 1 sister. Her oldest brother was most likely named Hans after their father. the second son was Clemens, and her third brothers name is unknown. Her sister's name is believed to be Maria. When she was 5 years old, her mother passed away, and Katharina was placed in the Benedictine Cloister to get an education, but not necessarily to become a nun.

At the age of 10, Katharina was transferred to Marienthron (Mary's Throne) in Nimschen. There in 1515 at the age of 16, she took her vows as a nun. When she read some of Martin Luther's work, she became interested and decided to leave the Convent and join the Reformation. She and 11 other nuns, with the help of Leonhard Koppe, left Marienthron. Martin Luther himself took up the ex-nuns' cause. He helped 11 of the nuns return to their families or marry. At the end there was only Katharina, who had a temporary home with the Lucas Cranach family.

On June 13, 1525, Martin Luther proposed to Katharina. That same night they were married with Justus Jonas, John Frederick, and the Cranach family as witnesses. When they married, Martin was 42 and Katharina 26.

the children of martin and katharina with Fabian.

katharina bore martin six children, 4 of whom lived to be adults. when their son hans, the eldest, had his first tooth, it was a national event. he lived to be 49 years old. Elisabeth, their second child and first daughter, died at eight months old. Magdalena lived to the age of 13 years. Martin jr. lived to be 34, paul lived to be 60, and margarete lived to be 36. katharina suffered from a miscarriage in 1539. The luthers also raised many orphans, including katharina's nephew fabian.

Some of Katharina's activities and chores at the Black Cloister included: brewing beer, buying cattle, driving the wagon, and being a loving wife and kind mother. Martin often called her the "morning star of Wittenburg" because of her habit of rising at 4 a.m.

When Martin died in 1546 from a heart attack while on a trip to settle a dispute among the princes, it was a hard blow to Katharina and the children. | War broke out and Katharina fled Wittenburg. When the war ended, she returned and had to rebuild her home. and farms because they had been destroyed in battles. Later Katharina had to flee again due to the plague. During the trip her horses were frightened and she was thrown from the wagon. No longer possessing the strength needed to recover, and at times barely hanging on to life, Katharina remained bed ridden for months. She finally died on December 20, 1555 at the age of 53 years old. She was buried in Torgau.

Katharina's greatest failures would be considered the deaths of her daughters: Elisabeth at eight months and Magdalena at 13. | Katharina's greatest accomplishment was her impact on the Reformation.

Katharina von Bora impacted the Reformation by setting the course for how the household should be kept in a Reformed environment. | The family became a model for German familes for centuries. | Luther viewed marriage as a school for character. | Family life helped train Christians in the virtues of fortitude, patience, charity, and humility.

It is actually nearly impossible to write a biography on Katharina von Bora because very little information is known about her other than the wife of the reformer Martin Luther. | Although her mortal remains were interned far from those of her beloved husband, Katharina remained faithful to Martin's teachings unto death.

5 Interesting facts | Margarete married into a noble and wealthy Prussian family. Her untimely death came in 1570 at the age of 36. Her descendants have continued to the present time. | Katharina was only eighteen at the time Martin Luther issued his now famous 95 theses from Wittenberg. | Katharina is commemorated in the Calendar of Saints of the Lutheran Church on December 20.
