S: Masai Mara - 2010
FC: Masai Mara - 2010 -David & Rhoda - -Davin & Christopher Martin
Johnny and our family left by 6:00 am for the Masai Mara, driving hours over windy, bumpy rodes. We saw a few accidents. | Thurs Jan 14 | Sugar Cane processing
 the Masai Mara
After the last 6 hours of extremely rough road with many "diversions" we finally arrived at the Serova Motel. They came out with wet washcloths which turned brown after wiping our faces. We walked across a bridge over a ravine into the motel. The buildings were open-air type, with a rustic flair. Porters carried our suitcases across for us and later down to our tent rooms. The birds just sang and sang, foliage was like a tropical paradise. This is very close to heaven on earth. We ate lunch, which had a choice of hot entrée with the buffet to top it off. We rested and the boys went swimming. We have a big canvas tent with an area made of concrete for the bathroom and shower. At 3:00 we headed out on our first drive through the safari. We hired a Masai warrior named Edward to guide us. We saw elephants grazing, numerous deer type animals and a lion in the sunset.
 Gazelles | Anthill
 Cape Buffalo,
 Grey Crown Crane
 E | Majestic | lephants
TOBY | Before going back, we saw this male lion along with 5 females in the distance. They all slowly got up and were stalking a prey.
After a delicious supper the Masai tribe came and did their dances. When we came into bed a hot water bottle was warming it for us! It is so peaceful listening to the crickets, etc singing as we lay in our beds.
We got up and had coffee and tea and left for our drive. A beautiful sunrise greeted us. We saw a lion arise and walk into the bush. Then drove through a herd of cape buffalo. The guide said they are ok as long as they are in a herd.
Then our guide directed Johnny way back into the bush. As we were driving slowly along Dave saw a black rhinoceros in the bush. It is rare to see one. We sat and watched it awhile.
Drove to the hippo pool and saw some mongoose playing.
Scenes on our morning drive. | jackal
 hyena devouring his prey
There was an eclipse this morning which cast a subtle glow to the scenery.
 The Secretary bird
Ate our lunch, relaxed and were out by 3:00. At first we weren't seeing much and were driving around until we came upon...
 A Giraffe taking a Drink!
As we drove back we saw elephants fighting in the distance. We drove up closer to get a better look. Our guide became very excited, clapping his hands above his head with a "WOW". | Elephant Fight!
The picture of the elephant backing up is REAL LIFE. The guide said "Get ready", so Johnny started the van and drove to a safer distance!
We then drove a short distance and saw three male lions along the road. There were lots of vans watching. Then there was news that there are female lions with cubs and everyone drove over there, but we had to turn around because of wet areas. As we drove back past the lions they were waking up and no one else was around! | Lions! | Lions! | Lions!
 Lions! | Lions! | Lions! | Lions!
They slowly woke up, yawned, walked right past our van; we could have reached out and touched them!
They walked one by one over to the other side of the van and sat down and snuggled each other.
 Sight of a Lifetime!
Then they walked regally up to a crest of a hill and majestically looked into the distance.
Then yawned again and one by one got up and walked into the distance to hunt for supper.
Then we were off to see 3 lionesses with seven cubs! A rare sight! There were about seven vans parked around watching.
The guide told us to take lots of pictures because this is very rare. The lionesses were very nervous with this many people around. There was a van stuck and some people were out pushing it out.
The lionesses started walking away, looking around nervously with the cubs following behind. | One cub straggled behind watching everything, it gave a small yip and went running after the others, then its curiosity would get the best of him and he would watch everyone again.
As we were driving we saw an Impala with a rainbow in the background.
And a lion with 2 lionesses against the sunset.
Time to get back, but we couldn't help but take the time to catch the elephants in the sunset on camera!
The heavens declare the glory ofGod, and the firmament sheweth His handiwork. -Ps. 19:1

 The inside of our tent.
Do we have to leave this place? If Jesus were present here it would be heaven!
Outside the Mara in Masai land we saw some zebras in the distance. We decided to drive into the field to get a few pictures. Not a good idea! | We soon had some Masai warriors at our windows demanding money or they will call the authorities. We paid them off and quickly left.
