FC: Road Trip to Austria 2007
Three intrepid travelers, Lesley Simpson, Lidia Darska and I set out on an eight-day trip to the Austrian Tyrol in May 2007.
Lesley, Lidia & I left Chatham at about 7.30a.m (BST) and were in Calais by 10a.m (BST+1). Being May Day the autobahn was clear, but what the route planner had said would be an 11 hr drive was actually nearer 15 hrs driving time! | Monday 1 May
Photo of the Austrotel in Innsbruck. It looks wonderful but the reality was very different . I had booked a disabled access room, asking if there was 12cm clearance under the bed. "No problem" they said. When we arrived (at a little bit before midnight) we found the base of the bed was part of the floor so I slept on a camp bed!
Tuesday 2 May | The first part of the morning was spent negotiating with the Austrotel to find us an alternative (and affordable) accommodation, so we stayed in Innsbruck for the same price we would have paid at the Austrotel.
Two publicity photos from the Penz Hotel's website. | It was as good as the photos show.
In the afternoon I went for a walk and found the Goldenes Dachl at the end of Maria-Theresian-Strasse nearest the hotel. There were frescos on all the buildings on Maria-Theresian-Strasse.
Back at the hotel. My bedroom at the Penz. Wood (or very good laminate) floors made it so easy with my hoist!
Wednesday 3 May | We stayed in the Imst area, driving a little west of Innsbruck and getting away from the tourist-y locations.
What we didn't know about the credit card shaped keys at the hotel was when they were not in their slots in the bedroom, the electricity was turned off. Result: one flat battery by Wednesday morning! However, the hotel came to the rescue in sourcing a chair (manual). Obviously we got a second key for my room!
Clouds and a view down the mountain near Imst. | Lesley returning to the car
Lidia and I having something to eat before we turned back to Innsbruck. | Mobile again by evening, eating at a restaurant on Maria-Theresian-Strasse
Thursday 4 May | Off to Pertisau!
'Heartsease from this place...' (OK, its a bit of a little misquote, but still ..!) | A view from the 21st century to the 20th century
 The Achensee
Hauntingly familiar names .. if you know the Chalet School books | Waiting by the steamer in (almost) Chalet School colours!
 Along the lake shore
 Going away from the lake
Friday 5 May | Off to the Stubai Glacier!
 Leaving Innsbruck behind
 This is as far as
 I expected to go | but ......
... my chair just fitted | Snow and rock.
into the cable car | We went up to about 3000m. The top bit of the cable car route was closed for repair, so we only went two-thirds of the way up the glacier.
Gathering clouds and skiers under the cable cars
 Storm clouds over Innsbruck
Saturday 6 May | Our last expedition took us to the Swarovski Crystal Museum at Watterns
A crystal-eyed green giant spewing a waterfall met us at the entrance to the museum | Me next to the largest crystal ever made
Engraved crystal tower (right top). a crystal jelly-fish with LED tentacles (right bottom) and a crystal wall (above)
A rainy evening back at the Penz
Sunday 7 May | Learning from the mistake of trying to do the drive to Calais in one day, we broke the return trip at Koblenz, staying at a hotel whose definition of "accessible" wasn't ours!
Lidia and Lesley were exhausted by the time we got to Koblenz. We had to put books under my bed so my hoist would go under it.
