37: WHAT IS IT ABOUT NOVEMBER’S IN BIG SUR? We've fallen in love with this wild, unspoiled coastline and the quiet, simple feeling of stepping back in time. The Big Sur coast is one of the most inaccessible and undeveloped regions in the United States. Highway 1 winds between the coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean, rolling from sea level to thousand-foot sheer drops. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the continental United States, towering almost a mile above the beaches. Less than 1000 people live in Big Sur year-round and each November, more and more familiar faces welcome us back. There were no paved roads here until the 40’s and no electricity until the 1950s. The pristine, natural beauty has been preserved thanks to the 1962 landmark court case which still bans billboards, visual distractions and any new construction within sight of Highway 1. There are fewer than 300 hotel rooms on the entire 100 mile stretch of Highway 1, only two gas stations, and not a single chain hotel, supermarket, or fast-food outlet. The lodging options are rustic cabins, or a few exclusive five-star resorts, with little in between. Some of our favorite haunts are clustered along the Big Sur River, where Highway 1 leaves the coast for a few miles and curls through the redwood forest, protected from ocean breezes and fog. From our little cabin we walk to dinner, dance to live music, and linger by the river on our stroll home . . . what's not to love? | WHAT IS IT ABOUT NOVEMBER’S IN BIG SUR?
