S: Six Year Anniversary Cruise - December 2010

FC: Ali & Vince's Six Year Anniversary MS Nieuw Amsterdam | December 2010

Welcome to the Nieuw Amsterdam | Our Six Year Anniversary was spent aboard Holland America's newest ship: The Nieuw Amsterdam! With a balcony room on the aft of the ship, we enjoyed a sweeping view of the warm, Caribbean waters as we sailed to four destinations over the course of seven days...

Goodbye Ft. Lauderdale! | On November 28th, we said farewell to Ft. Lauderdale and embarked on our first cruise together - a seven day journey across the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Relaxation Mode engaged before we even finished pulling out of port. As the sun set on Ft. Lauderdale, Vince napped on our balcony as Ali took photos of the disappearing coastline. Our journey toward the first stop in our 7 Day cruise had begun, and we sailed toward the Bahamas...

I wish I could stay here forever.... | Our first stop in the Western Caribbean cruise was at Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, a private island owned by the cruise line and designed for nothing but fun in the sun! In Half Moon Cay we swam in crystal clear water, drank fruity rum beverages, and jumped on a trampoline floating in the sea. Vince thought the water was a little too cold, but Ali thought it was just right and chased fish around with a waterproof camera. | Day One: Half Moon Cay

Catamaran Sail & Snorkel Tour | In Grand Turk we took a sailing tour run by Jamaicans who believed in drinking rum punch all day - which we did. It turns out Vince is a champion snorkeler, while Ali drank so much that she danced on the front of the boat as it cruised back into port. | Day Two: Grand Turk & Caicos

 Snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea....

Day Three: A Day at Sea | Vince and Ali jumped at the chance to do absolutely nothing, and spent the first day at sea drinking frosty beverages, soaking up the sun, grabbing books from the library, and napping on the promenade deck. We discovered ping pong tables, secret pool decks, the spa, a gym, and a quiet piano bar off of the casino where we watched Cuba go by...

Passing Cuba on our way to Grand Cayman Island

 Day Four: Grand Cayman Island

Our day in Grand Cayman was spent shopping for something very special: Our Tanzanite Engagement Ring. After browsing every jewelry store in Grand Cayman, we came to Tanzanite International and were encouraged to design our own ring. One averted disaster later, we walked away with a 2.75ct cushion cut Tanzanite and a setting with 64 stunning white diamonds in a tri-band micro-pave setting. We were nervous, and excited, and more in love than ever...

Day Five: Costa Maya, Mexico | The reason we decided to book this particular cruise was simple: To see Mayan Ruins outside of Costa Maya, Mexico. We pulled into port and took a two hour bus ride through the Yucatán Peninsula to the Kohunlich ruins. The ruins are thousands of years old and known for the beautiful masks portraying the life-cycle of the sun - birth, youth, old age, and death. And they still have their original paint!

Our final formal night was bittersweet. The ship hosted a chocolate extravaganza, which took up an entire pool deck, and we had dinner at The Tamarind restaurant. Vince ordered a drink called "The Black Pearl," made from vanilla vodka, cranberry juice, and Chamboard. Ali enjoyed sushi and a frosty rum beverage. After dinner we enjoyed chocolate desert and drinks, and savored the festive attitude of all on-board. | Formal Night at the Tamarind

Day Six: A Day at Sea | Our second day at sea was our last full day aboard the ship, and so we spent it exactly as we wanted: Relaxing, napping, tanning, drinking, and partaking in the hot tub, library, and spa. It was a perfect day.

We spent our last sunset and dinner with a couple we met on our snorkeling tour. Nancy and Brian were like a future version of us - happy, well-traveled, professionals. They toasted our engagement ring purchase with champagne on our balcony, and we said our farewells. It was the perfect ending to a perfect celebration of six amazing years of Vince and Ali.

Our last sunset, as seen from our balcony.
