2: Before leaving to New Zealand, I spent the day in St. Paul, MN with my sister where we watched The Amazing Spider-Man in the theater, ate out a restaurant, and went to the Como Zoo, where we spent most of the day. | Como Zoo

4: Punakaiki is a small community on the Eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand located in between Greymoth and Westport. It is a beautiful coastal area with a population of under 1,000. Perhaps most well known for its Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, Punakaiki also has several tracks, both biking and walking, that vary from a few days to a a few hours that you can take. I was very happy to spend 2 weeks of my life here volunteering. It's sheer mountainside and bristling oceanside view more than made up for a lack of extracurricular activities. | PUNAKAIKI

6: I stayed in one of two small cabins located right in Punakaiki, only a few minutes drive from our volunteer site and a short walk to nearby trails and the Pankcake rocks. I stayed with two other guys and our project leader, Emma while the girls stayed in the other one. My cabin was the primary one where we ate and had all of our meetings.

12: We had many rainy days, some of which we stayed in side at worked on planting trees in small cups and cutting small cardboard triangles which we used to hold up the trees once outside.

27: JADE CARVING

28: GREYMOUTH Greymouth is about 27 miles South from Punakaiki which I visted a few times. One reason was for shopping as there were no shopping centers in Punakaiki and the other as a switching station between cities.

30: SPRINGFIELD Springfield is a small town located between Christchurch and Greymouth. We stayed here only one night until leaving for Christchurch and the beginning of the adventure tour the next morning.

36: On Thursday, July 16th, we said goodbye to our Project Leader, Emma and flew to Queenstown to meet up with the rest of our Adventure Tour group and begin the second part of our ISV New Zealand experience, the Adventure Tour!

38: QUEENSTOWN Known as the adrenaline capital of the world, Queenstown is located at the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. This party city is filled with tons of restaurants, bars, activities, and a beautiful mountainous backdrop to boot. I was fortunate to spend 3 nights here, more than any other city in the Adventure Tour.

42: Shotover Jet Experience

47: BUNGY JUMPING

50: "RIDE OF THE RINGS" A horseback tour through Paradise highlighting key scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Hobbit.

52: FRANZ JOSEF/RAINFOREST RETREAT A small city known for its surrounding glaciers. We stayed at this small resort with a lounge, restaurant, and kitchen among other things.

54: ICE EXPLORER | We spent a few hours on the Franz Josef glacier, one of New Zealand's more well-known, but not the largest, glaciers. It is unique in the sense that is surrounded by dense rainforest. We took a helicopter ride up to the glacier and while it was initially quite cool, we all got really warm as we traversed the icy landscape.

60: Seal Island

62: NELSON is known as the "Sunshine Capital of New Zealand". Nelson was the was my home to skydiving and quad biking. Our accommodation, Nelson YHA, was rather large with a vast kitchen and dining area and a recreation area with pool tables and the like.

65: Skydiving

66: Quad Biking | Quad Biking

70: WELLINGTON is the capital of New Zealand and our first taste of true New Zealand city life with skyscrapers and other unique architecture. We only spent one night in this city, but there are so many things to do that it will leave you wanting to go back.

78: ROTORUA/ ROTORUA YHA has the nickame of Sulfur City as the whole place smells like sulfur. It is located in a geothermal hotspot in New Zealand. The accommodation was small but very communal with our own ktichen and living room area.

84: Kaikuna Rapids White Water Rafting

88: ZORB

91: HUKA FALLS is one the most unique stops we made during the Adventure tour. This amazing fast flowing river which amasses close to 58,000 gallons a second, spans about 100 yards is located in the Northern Island of New Zealand. We only stayed here for a minutes as a part of one of the many road trips we took.

92: WAITOMO is a very small district that is known for its magnificent underground labyrinth of limestone caves and formations, known as the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. There is also a bar and a small shop here as well as a haunted hotel and another hostel, Kiwi Paka, in which we stayed.

97: black water | rafting

98: AUCKLAND is the largest city in New Zealand which is one of the only cities in the world to be surrounded by two oceans. As our last stop in New Zealand, we spent only one night.

103: AUCKLAND SKYTOWER

106: SAN DIEGO The other part of my summer vacation was spent with John and Gracie,, a couple I met in South Africa in 2011. I spent 5 days with them, hopping from one place to another in Southern California, the first of which was in Sand Diego. This was my first visit to California.

112: My first official stop during the California portion of my trip was in San Diego. While staying at John's aunt's place, we spent 2 full days including a little bit of Sunday at SeaWorld. Fortunately, for us, John's aunt was able to get us a military discount and not only that, but paid for the ticket in full. SeaWorld is unique in the sense where it has great shows such as Shamu's "One Ocean, One World" and fun animal exhibits with exhilarating rides like "The Manta" and "Shipwreck Rapids". | SAN DIEGO SEAWORLD

118: BAKERSFIELD is a small city by most American standards, but, as John's hometown, I stayed here for two nights. It has a university where both he and Gracie went to school and many recreational spots including Camelot where we played mini-golf.

128: TOPANGA/ BRADLEY'S HOUSE | Bradley Seidenglanz is someone else I met on my trip to Africa though he was never part of my group and I didn't get a chance to known him as well as John and Gracie. He was kind of enough to give me a place to stay for my final night in California. He also introduced me to some of his friends and showed a little bit more of California than I ever expected to see and even dropped me off at LAX.

130: SANTA MONCIA is a a beachfront city located in Western Los Angeles county where I stayed very briefly on my way to LAX airport. I had never been there and the whole experience was an extra treat on top of an already amazing vacation.
