S: The Maywald Camping Crusade 2010

FC: The Maywald Camping Crusade 2010 | "Not all who wander are lost"

CAMPING | Camping makes some of the best family times...

What to do with 66 1/2 hours of family time in the car... | Get very acquainted with "Susan"...the TomTom voice...maybe even argue with her or shush her a few times. Watch the entire nine hours of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Commit as a family to memorize all the books of the Bible before the end of the trip...and argue about "Song of Solomon/Songs" in between. Sleep...except for Dad...he has to drive the whole time. Pass around the power cords and air cards for the 5 laptops on board. Tell Dad repeatedly that one of us has to pee or is hungry. Hunt for Texas license plates... Watch the temperature drop to more pleasant ranges as we drive further North...and then climb again as we get closer to Texas. | Listen to that "crack trip" book on tape that Mom borrowed from JoJo.

Josh turns everything into a stupid song..."wailing in Memphis"...and "beaver jive"

 396 miles | 5020 total miles driven 66 hours of driving 18 states + Canada in 16 days | before | after

 526 miles | 651 miles | 320 miles | 480 miles | 538 miles | 480 miles | 805 miles

First stop... DeGray Lake State Park in Arkansas

We all had different things we were looking forward to at each stop. Josh wanted to fish, Leah wanted to draw, and Anna wanted to swim. Mick and I just enjoyed the scenery and doing it all together.

Back to the lake for some nighttime swimming and this beautiful sunset

"When I admire the wonder of a sunset, or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in worship of the Creator." -Ghandi

Horse Cave, Kentucky | Arkansas | The Potomac River

The things you see when you drive cross country... | A real tombstone that read "Gilly Weed"...in Kentucky | There might be a hospital this exit... but we aren't sure? | Or maybe there's a surprise that direction? :)

Kamping Kentucky | This wasn't Leah's favorite spot...she said it felt like a parking lot...but Anna loved that we were right next to the "Noah's Ark" playground, and they both loved the fireflies everywhere...

Josh didn't catch any fish here, but they both almost caught a duck a few times...

Kinda lame, actually, and not worth the money we paid for it, but we made the best of it and laughed at the "cartoon dinosaurs"...and Anna enjoyed digging for fossils and dinosaur teeth.

We saw gypsum and the giant's coffin...plus artifacts and prehistoric drawings on the cave rocks.

Exploring the caves by only lantern light... | We even saw an old TB hospital underground in the caves...an unsuccessful attempt to save the TB patients in the early 1900's

The fish that wouldn't stop biting Mickey...and the fact that I made him stand very still until I got its picture...:) | Some of the things we will remember most... | Fireflies in Kentucky.."she caught a few and she put them in a jar..." | Dad's fortune cookie just before we left... | Anna's belly roll... | The black squirrel in New York | Five laptops in Beck's living room as we play Canasta against each other and Jody...:)

Ridiculously loud Harry Potter UNO. | The Six Pack crew in Arkansas... | The sad fates of the woodchuck and Simon, the chipmunk, when they get in Dad or Josh's way... | Josh and Leah's Harry Potter scrabble

from Anna's "journal" NEW YORK In New York we stayed somewhere where the playground was not too far away and the grass felt like cold wet carpet on your feet. I came outside every day where we were staying and ran around barefoot. They had a lot of bridges in New York too.

Our view of the Canadian skyline across the beautiful Lake Ontario...

We met up with mom and dad and the Wilson's in New York. Jared's idea to try the famous "Anchor Bar" turned out to be a very tasty idea. It is the home of the first buffalo wing, We enjoyed the food and company both...The girls were so excited to see each other. Anna said seeing Mace and Grace was going to be the "best part of the trip".

Niagara Falls, NY | Since we were passing through Niagara Falls on their way to Vermont, and it was one of Dad's "bucket list"retirement adventures, we thought it would be fun to fly Mom and Dad straight to Buffalo so that Beck and her family could intercept them there and then bring them back to Vermont for awhile.. It was so much fun to experience Niagara with such a big group of family.

 Water + Cousins =

 You Make My Sun Shine

"Families are like fudge ... mostly sweet with a few nuts."

 MAKING MEMORIES

 Smiles Are Contagious! | precious

"Good times are even better when they are shared" | anna | grin

wildflowers, wild life, & wild little girls

Dad's "illegal" flower made us all smile | simple pleasures

Beck's "tiny little nephew", Josh | Maid of the Mist was so much fun. It took us right into the Horsheshoe Falls. The kids thought it was so much fun to get all wet, and the adults were stunned by the beauty and power of the falls.

It's impossible to describe the sounds of the massive amounts of water crashing over the edge of the falls. Such an incredible experience! | We got to climb right up to the base of the falls. There were several tiers, and of course, the higher we climbed, the more DRENCHED we got.

"Little Girls are Heavens Flowers" | 2010

 FAMILY

A very small string of islands... nothing fancy, but packed full of adventures. Exploring here was one of the kid's favorite parts of the day.

...and the adults were just amazed at how close we were to the raging water that led straight to the falls... it's surprising there aren't more "accidents"

 Beautiful | Amazing

So relaxing...the self paced tour of the rest of the park was almost as beautiful as the falls themselves. | certain views looked like walls of water falling from nowhere...

The perfect end to a perfect day.... Sitting around with family enjoying the view, the campfire, some dutch oven cooking, and s'mores.

 Crossing to CANADA...

We couldn't come this far and not cross into Canada...dad got grilled by border patrol, because apparently they think all Texans carry guns. :) And mom got in trouble for taking a picture at the border crossing...but the Canada view of the falls was worth it completely.

 the Canada side

 breathtaking

...a 5 pound chocolate bar ...mmm

(from Anna's journal) CANADA I was so excited about Canada. We went for a hoodie for me...we couldn't find one but we did find one at Niagara Falls (In New York) its pink with darker pink letters that say NIAGARA FALLS I like it a lot it is also very warm and fluffy. | ...souvenirs for Krystal and Lauren

 Rainbows

Mick threatened to throw the camera over the falls if I stopped to take one more rainbow picture...but I couldn't help it. I've never seen so many in one day...sometimes two at a time...and touching the ground. The constant moisture in the air from the falls makes them much more prevalent...and vivid...beautiful!!

 Journey Behind the Falls

A view from the tunnels behind the water...

 Rainforest Cafe

 Canada 2010 | "Volcano!"

Next stop... Vermont and the Wilson's new home | from Anna's journal... In Vermont I got to see my two cousins Macy and Grace. We had so much fun together ...we rode trails together, explored a pretty waterfall...

...looked in a old barn together and played games together. the grass felt real good there too.

Let's go get ice cream! | Waterbury, VT

I hope all your birthday dreams and wishes come true! | Mace & Grace

Teaching these Vermontees about real ice cream...;)

...a relaxing afternoon at Lake St. Catherine!

Who would have known this tiny town in Vermont would host one of the best fireworks shows we've ever seen. It was so much fun to spend the 4th of July celebrating with the Wilson's...meeting some of their new friends...visiting their church...and enjoying their company...Good times! | Back on the road... 1st thing in the morning...

More beautiful scenery... | More hiking... | July 2010 Cunningham Falls State Park | "The Land of Chipmunks" | Camping Maryland

 ...then a swim... | ...a little more exploring... | ...a quick rest...

 South Carolina | ...that's Dad :)

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina July 2010

 Parasailing on Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach at night | ...but Anna had to get wet...so we made her ride back on top of the ice chest in the back of the car... | ...kind of spooky to step into the ocean when you can't see three feet in front of you...

We didn't even realize there were mountains in Alabama., but this park was amazing. Delta, Alabama

Anna loved the BBQ chicken buffet in this beautiful mountaintop restaurant. Then hot dogs and s'mores around the campfire for dinner.

THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN FUN... | Now back to Texas... | Looking forward to the next trip already...
